View Full Version : *Need Your Advice about my tumblr....*

Okay... I tried for a second time {yeah yeah, I know!} almost for a year now to keep a tumblr-blog-thingie.
Lately I have conflicts with myself. :what:
On one side I don't really care and keep on posting my Graphics and on the other side I have the "I'm to old for this sh&t" and "What the hell am I doing here?" feelings.
The regular age are the teenagers and the 20 somethings and there is me, a 42 {yep, I'm a Dinosaur and currently trying to get a part in Terra Nova!} year old Dutch cheese-head with an old-fashioned {kind-a} style.
However even though I have an O-F style I discovered that for some reason there are also certain people who "steal" your hard work, do some editing with it and re-post it under their names.
I know that this is a risk when you post @ tumblr that people actually do "steal/copying or something like that" and lately it really make me kind-a sad and I don't want to feel this way anymore....

That's why I'm posting a poll to see what you guys are thinking...
I'm kind a lost in a Fringe-Freaking World...

I voted 'Other' cause the option 'Don't shut your blog down' isn't up there
Honey, your blog is amazing... and it's a way to let other people see your work.
It's not about the age, trust me, sometimes I feel old too cause I'm 21 and other girls are 14 :confused0066:, so don't worry...
Your art is impossible to reproduce by others, and you know that if someone reposts your stuff most of us will know that it isn't theirs, cause your style is unique, and let you know or reblog it from the original. Remember last time it happened? That person ended up deleting all the stolen posts
:party0011: V-I-C-T-O-R-Y :party0011:
Don't let some silly 13 year-old's who think they can steal the pictures you worked so hard on and get away with it bring you down...

Oh no no no...Please don't delete your tumblr...Your blog is amazing and so are you!And I don't believe the age thing...As long as you keep making these amazing graphics and you offer so much to the fringe fans, you have every right to be on tumblr as anyone else!!!!I think your work is brilliant as I've told you a billion times(you've probably tired of me saying it,but I honestly think so!) and your blog one of the best!!!As for the people who steal your work, you can rely on your followers to warn you about those losers!!!Keep doing your thing because we like it:)....You are great at what you do!!!!And that's what tumblr is for...For fans with great talent,no matter the age or anything else!

I chose the 'Tumblr whot??' option cause I still have no idea what the eff it is... but i digress...

I've contemplated getting a tumbler thingy for my fanfics, and I'm torn. (One of the reasons I got Twitter, actually, too) Any way to echo with Olive and FD said... you've got serious talent in the graphic arts area, my dear.

If there's one thing that's great about the internet it's the aspect of age is nothing but a number. Faces and sizes don't matter. It's all about finding a common bond (like.. Fringe! lol). It's what unites us and forms friendships that span more than just one universe. Some of my best friends live thousands of miles away across the other side of the country. I tell them more than I can tell my friends living down the block. If people feel the need to steal your work then let them, because eventually they're going to get caught and all their credibility will vanish in the blink of an eye. Sure, it's gonna suck, but your work is honorable. The fact they need to steal it is just pathetic anyway, and eventually, yes, they will be caught in their little angst ridden teenagey web of lies.

Don't delete it. Let it prosper and grow. Your blog is effking mind-blowing. Don't let the haters stop you from doing your thang.

*Yeah I know, the last time I did delete my account correct, this time I won't do that, promisse....
However the "What the hell am I doin' here" is a question I ask myself way to often lately. I do love creating stuff and especially design brushes {which I post @ dA} and I do post my Graphics also @ my BlogSpot....It does makes me wondering if I must keep my tumblr "Alive".
I also understand that there are certain people who steel someone elses hard work and claim as their own still it does s#@k!
Thank you for your reply luv, I do appreciate it a lot!

On the 'don't delete your tumblr!' side as well. It's awesome, I love your work.:love0050: And yeah, the majority of people on there are younger people I think, but that's why the internet is great, people don't tend to judge you as much by your age and looks etc like they do in real life. As for people stealing your work, it does make me mad and it sucks  but most of the time after a few angry messages they take stuff down, so don't let it spoil your fun. As long as you're enjoying it, I'd say keep doing it. :tiphat:

It is fun to create graphics and do "manips" /Matte Art but somehow I have the feeling that I'm a bit Old Fashioned with my doodah's.....

Mutsie-

I'm new to these art threads and really haven't followed your tumbler at all.

But please don't feel like a dinosaur.

The only reason I even have CS3 is because I gave it to my and she updated to CS5 (using our student discounts--my mom paid a lot of our tuition and frankly, she's a student, too). Next year she will be 60, and is desperately trying to land a job in graphic arts. She's a bit 'old fashion,' too. I look at her stuff and it still looks a little bit amateurish, but very very good. She's had 3 Freelance gigs in so many years, so it's certainly not a living, yet. Sometimes she feels like giving up...60 is a tough age to reenter the market in any field...but especially in graphic arts...but thank goodness she hasn't yet. Don't feel old, please! It's easy to in this culture (I suppose it's gone global). Also, some of her favorite bloggers are in Finland, Belgium, The Netherlands....

I feel it, too. I'm only 25, but when I look at these fanvidders and artists 5 or more years younger...I feel like I have so much catching up to do and so little time to do it. Hang in there; you're quite good, you know!

Hey Mutsie! :o

Just thought I'd pop in here for a quick visit.

What's with this old fashioned talk?:confused0066: :haha: Heh. From experience when your inner spirit starts whispering the 'O' word to you, take and deep breath, feel the calm, and accept that there are lots of people out there who love you. Your art comes a second best - though it is high quality.:o

Next, this phenomena of feeling a little 'behind-the-times' is common in the field of art. It is particularly difficult for those who are public performers. Oftentimes the solution for these people is to re-invent. This means moving out of the comfort zone and changing things up a little. Performing artists like Madonna and Bono for example have tried and re-tried - hehe:haha:. I read an article recently where saxophonist Kenny G had just gone through a mid-life period of introspection and found that re-invention was the key to his future. Actors often have to do the same thing. Some make it. Some don't. Probably what's more important is that they give it a go.

Of course this does not mean the person themselves change, it's only what they do that may need re-tweaking.

Find a mentor artist [as a suggestion], if need be, someone you admire who stimulates your creative juices, whose graphic compositions and use of space, color, light and so on is possibly 'risky' in your eyes yet simply beautiful to look at. If they are a younger artist/s so be it. Talent is ageless.

And it's not a sin [for you] to **cough cough** copy ideas and adapt them to your sensibility from time to time. Experience and time become second nature. Maybe you're ready to take a few more risks artistically - only you know the answer to this one.

In terms of copying others check out this link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwFdExvCxM4) - now this person really succeeded at it!!! :haha: In fact he did such a good job others copied his copy! Check this out. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpafo1G7CeM) Classic. Ok, sure, he's a muso but the principle is the same. Heh!:happy15:

Time to step out:carrot: !!!

And no need to worry, we'll all be here for you when you need us.

MM:tiphat:

PS. Hope I haven't been too pushy:ashamed0001: Disregard anything here as you wish. All the best Mutsie. MM

I know that I must put my fear a-side and start a new direction, sort a, with my Graphics and I do have a lot if ideas but am afraid to act on it {or what is may called in English:ashamed0001:}... It's a bit scary and I have the feeling that it "is-sooo-not-me".

I know this is an old thread, but Mustie you had a problem with protecting your creations before and I wanted to let you know about a few possible solutions if you didn't know about them already.

First, google "digital watermark software". This is the software that lets you put a VISIBLE watermark on images to add a copyright or whatever to it.

But, what is probably more useful, would be to search for "hidden digital watermark software" because a HIDDEN watermark is basically embedding the watermark and/or your information to identify the images as yours in the photo but you can't see it. Its using a technique called steganography to basically hide something in plain sight. So your watermark is there, but if someone steals it then you can basically prove its yours even if they can't see the watermark because you have a private key that exposes the information when you run it through the program, and they'll have no clue what it is. It probably won't stop it from being stolen, but the evidence is there to try and convince them to take it down and prove its yours in a way even the authorities will be inclined to believe.

This technology is used a lot to hide images and is REALLY hard to detect that its there, and in NO way is it visible because its all mixed in to the image information along with your private key and special software's algorithm.

Try watermarker dot com, product name "icemark" for a general description, but I just found this particular software after a quick google and there is bound to be cheaper and even free options out there. I like looking for free software on tucows or downloads dot com, did a quick search for 'watermark' on there for you just now and there are plenty of freeware or shareware options to choose from. :-)

Let me know if you have any questions about it, I appreciate all the time you spend on this forum and always look forward to your posts. :happy15:
