Cold to the Touch: A Fringe Mystery.

Chapter One: I feel a cold coming on.

The sun begins to set, casting a tree’s final shadow as its leaves slowly glide to the ground and the branches sway far in the wind. The busy traffic begins to calm, and people start to close their blinds and lock their doors, settling for the night. But not everybody is settling. To some, this Friday evening is just the beginning. They dress up in formal clothing, get their supply of alcohol for the night and head out to party, as the rest of the world slowly drifts into sleep. What they don’t know, is that they picked a bad night for a celebration.

“Damn it, just stay still.” The man grumbled, tightening his grip on her soft, small arm. He grabbed the syringe from his table, and the woman stared wide-eyed as he took it and jabbed it into a vein on her arm. She winced and pictured the thick, light yellow liquid flowing through her, entering her system… making her safe.
“Are you sure this will work?” She asks, but her tone is flat.
The man grumbles, and crumbs in his thick grey beard fall to the ground. She watches them, trying anything to divert her attention from the painful burning that’s ripping through her arm.
“So they tell me.” He says at last. “I’m just the guy that drops you off.”
She nods, “Yeah, and I’m just the lab rat. Guess that’s life.”
“Guess so…. Now, where was I supposed to take you again?” He asks, as he gets up and grabs his car keys from his medical coat. The long jacket sways behind him as he walks.
“It’s a club. It’s called Crypto Nite.”
The man chuckles at the name as they walk down the corridor. Lights flicker above them, making the halls look like there closing in around them.
They reach the parking lot, and silently get inside the dark black SUV, slamming the doors shut as they enter. They swiftly pull out of the parking lot, the lights turned off. They blend into the streets like a ghost.
“So, tell me… what’s a beautiful woman like you getting stuck risking her life with some dumb experiments?” He grins as he pats his fingers to the beat of the music on the wheel, while every so often glancing at her.
She turned towards him; her bright blue eyes seemed to glow in the dark. She smirked, knowing that this old man was attempting to flirt with her.
“It pays the bills. Plus, I’m with Danny.” She grinned.
He frowned, but turned to look at her. “Well, he ought to treat you better then, shouldn’t he? Can’t he get someone else to do his dirty work? Hell, if I had you…”
She cut him off. “You wouldn’t have me. I’m with Danny, and he needs my help. But if you must know, they needed someone attractive, and all you Dr .Frankenstein’s surely don’t fit the bill.”
He smiled, as the car slowed down. “This it?”
She nodded, as she reached for the car door. She paused, then seductively leaned forward, “Could I get a goodbye kiss?” She asked him, batting her eyelids.
He smirked and leaned forward, but stopped dead in his tracks. “Nice try, but I think I’d rather live.”
“Suit your self, chauffer.” And she slammed the door behind her.
He shook his head and slammed his foot on the gas, and muttered ‘b*tch’ under his breath.

------------------------
“Dude, check out that babe over there!” A young, handsome man says to his friend. The music of the club shakes the floor, and the lights dart around, causing everything to have its own bright appearance.
“She’s so outta your league, man!” He jokes back, but he pushes his friend towards her.
He dances up closer to her, her bright blue eyes firmly hold his gaze, and she smiles.
“Damn, you sure have beautiful eyes.” He says as he smiles at her.
“So they say. And you, you have nice lips.” She says seductively, “I wonder if they’re as soft as they look…” She leans toward him, wanting to get this all over with.
“Baby, there’s only one way to find out.” He leans into her, pressing his lips against her and begins to kiss her passionately.
Within seconds his eyes glow brighter and brighter, and the eyes that were once a dark green, are now a bright, radiant lime color. His body starts to twitch and he feels as if electricity is flowing throughout him. He yanks away from her, his lips feeling like acid. His head is pounds, and his heart thumps faster.
“What the hell did you have to drink?” He says, but his lower lip begins to quiver. Suddenly, his mouth is oozing a thick, clear slime. He tries to scream but his mouth is numb, his whole face is numb. The woman backs away now, a dark smile spread across her face. She turns away from him as the crowd around them starts to see what’s going on. People hurry toward him, holding him up as he begins to collapse. His muscles are all paralyzed, and without any warning he vomits the slime on the people around. They shriek and his body drops to the floor. His eyes roll over, as a thick slime covers them. The people all around are screaming now, wiping the slime off their faces as they look at one another, they realize the worst possible thing. He’s contagious. Slowly, the clear, oozing slime has reached everyone in the room, like some sort of sick domino effect. As it spreads all the way to the last people uninfected, a terror of screams burst out as they rush to the door, but they only reach the handle before there eyes glaze over. They’re all dead.
FRINGE.

Thanks Gorim and Elly!:D
It is somewhat similiar to The Cure, and also in ways the bus scene in Ghost Network.

Chapter Two: Awkward Awakenings.

It’s raining now, and the little drops of rain splat against her window, mimicking her from the outside. She rolls over, extending a hand in the dark, imagining where the lamp switch would be. She manages to find it, and switching it on, she rolls back over, sighing.
She’s a light sleeper, and that means rain is the worst thing for her, considering she has got no sleep all week.
To make matters worse, she’s completely aware as to why she’s had the sudden insomnia. It’s his fault. He’s the reason she always looks behind her, he’s the reason she needs to turn a light on in a dark room, he’s the reason for everything terrible, and he is the own reason that he’s dead.
She shuddered at the thought of him, and at the fact that she couldn’t get him out her mind. This wasn’t surprising since he was still in her head, literally. She rolled off her blankets and slowly stumbled through her dark house to the kitchen, feeling around for the light switch all while holding on to the wall for support.
Within minutes her coffee was made and she was on the couch, flipping on the television.
She settled on an infomercial, hoping it would bore her to sleep.
The ringing of a phone startled her, and she jumped up, managing to bump her coffee to the ground, while reaching for the phone.
“Son of a….” She started, but regained herself before answering. “Olivia Dunham.”
“Agent Dunham, It’s Broyles.” His voice was stern and flat. She found herself wondering if this guy ever slept. “There’s been another incident, were pretty sure it has to do with the pattern. Gather the others and get to Crypto Nite Club in less than an hour.”
“A night club, really?” She asked, surprisingly.
The dial sent out a constant flat toned beep, and she knew he had already hung up.
Without wasting anymore time, she put the phone down and ran to her room to get changed, forgetting all about her now coffee stained rug.

----------------------------------
“Walter…Walter!…Open up!” She called, knocking on the hotel door.
She heard muffles from the other side, and just when she was about to knock again, Walter pulled open the door, the little lock chain on the other side only allowing it to open a few feet.
“Goodness! I said we didn’t need any room service!” He yelled, slowly opening his eyes. “Oh… Olivia, it’s you!”
She smiled, as she watched Peter slowly walk up behind Walter, rubbing his eyes.
“So, what weird, paranormal killing happened this time?” Peter yawned.
“Not sure yet, but it’s at a club.” Olivia smirked. “How long do you need to get ready?”
“Ten minutes?” Peter suggested.
“Better make it eleven…”Walter chimed in, “I feel a bowel movement coming…”
Peter groaned, shaking his head, and glancing at Olivia, who had a puzzled look of her own.
“I think I’ll wait outside…” She smiled.

Chapter Three: Bad Medicine

The rain continued to pour heavy, causing anything within a few meters away almost invisible. Olivia switched the window wipers to High and squinted at the dark, deserted streets.
“Having trouble seeing in the rain, Miss Dunham?” Walter inquired from the back, leaning forward to get a better view, as he deeply breathed out a sharp minty smell.
“Um, a little, yes. It’s really coming down out there…But we’re almost there.” She said, keeping her glance directly ahead, smiling at nothing in particular.
Walter leaned back in his seat, “I wish we had those ass-warmers back here.” He muttered.
Peter chuckled, and shook his head grinning. “I have no idea how the staff at St.Claire’s put up with you….”
Olivia turned left and instantly, they knew they were in the right place. Crime Scene tape bordered the whole parking lot, and more than fifty people wearing astronaut-like suits crowded all around the door. The music still blared from inside, shaking the ground around, and they could see the many different coloured lights shining out the windows. Ever more people, not wearing suits, huddled under a canopy a couple hundred meters away, with clip boards in there hands, trying to avoid the pouring rain surrounding them. A big Massive Dynamic van pulled up beside Olivia and three men with ever bigger suits piled out.
“Ugh, check out these knights in shining armor...” Peter mumbled.
“You guys can stay here, I’m going to find Broyles and find out what’s going on.” Olivia said, opening the door.
“No way, this looks way to interesting to take a rain check.” Peter said, hurriedly getting out. Walter followed the two, holding up an already soaked arm to try and stay as dry as he could.
It was Broyles that found Olivia first, he gestured for her to come under the canopy.
“Excellent timing yet again, Agent Dunham. I’m sure you’re very interested to know what’s going on, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to tell you on the telephone. As you can see, none of us here really know what’s going on either. Nobody has gone inside.”
“Well, I’m here, so let’s get started, where can I suit up?” Olivia asked, anxiously.
“Just hold on. All we know is that it’s highly contagious, and it will get you fast. The first cops that arrived on the scene…well…were pretty sure they didn’t last more than a minute.”
Peter shuddered, “So, what exactly happens in there?”
“At the moment, we don’t know all to well… but it seems to give you some sort of virus, within moments, of course. Your immune system certainly cannot take it, and it shuts your entire body down, all while making you ooze some form of slime through your eyes and ears.” Broyles said, his tone still remaining flat.
“Okay, that’s disgusting.” Peter replied, the image of it all filling into his head at the very moment.
Olivia also remained calm, but was now trying to see through the windows.
“So, if it’s just a virus, how is it spread?” Olivia asked.
“Well, once it’s been triggered, it can be spread through all the peoples breath. And with all that air contained in the room, the rooms been highly contagious for a while too… We’ve been scanning, and it’s clear that it’s going away. But they want anyone within a certain distance wearing gear. They plan on going in soon.”
There was a long silent pause, as everyone took in what was going on. Olivia was trying to peek at the people getting ready to go in, and Walter was oddly too quiet.
“Is there any…vomit?” Walter asked, clasping his hands together.
Broyles turned suddenly to Walter, his eyes locking in. “Yes. How did you know this?”
Walter paused, then taking a deep breath, slowly responded, “I believe…. I believe I created the virus.”

Chapter Four: Lethal Connections

Broyles eyes widen, and Olivia stared at Walter with disbelief.
“Why, Walter, does this somehow not surprise me?” Peter sighed.
“I want details, Walter.” Olivia strictly said, Broyles nodded along.
“Of course… Well, there were a few of us…we had a team; we wanted to help the world with common things that could kill people. Thus, the flu, chicken pox, and of course, colds.”
Peter listened intensively to Walter, hearing this never before told part of his past.
“So after enhancing different medicines, we managed to find something that we thought was the cure. We were so positive, too. Of course David, being oh-so brave, tested it on himself. We warned him not too, but he was always so stubborn…. Once I remember, when we first met, he said to me—“
“Walter. The rest of the story please?” Olivia begged.
“Oh, right. Anyways, he managed to give this cold, the same one as in that club, to his wife. Of course, he never caught it, and nobody around her did either, so it didn’t seem contagious. Anyways, she died; ooze and all, and he killed himself. After that, Belly quit the project too, so it became forgotten.”
“Wait, Belly? Do you mean William Bell again?” Olivia asked.
“Yes, yes. And so a few years later, our lab was broken into, and among the things stolen, was the ‘cure’ to the cold. We were so caught up in something else, we didn’t bother much, since we really didn’t think it was contagious.” Walter finished.
“So what you’re saying is, someone else has it, regenerated it, and is now using it to kill mass loads of people?” Peter asked.
“It seems that was, doesn’t it?” Walter grinned.
“What your saying is you don’t know strong it is now.” Broyles stated.
“Precisely. Although, with my lab, I’m sure we could figure it out. My lab is still there, right?”
“Yes, Walter.” Peter frowned.
“Well, then let’s go inside!”

As soon as the front door was opened, a discomforting aroma stung the noses of the small group of ten that had entered. The lights were dim, but flashes all around, showing the oozing faces of each dead body inside. All around, bodies were found all among the floor, each persons eyes rolled back. Everyone that had entered was wearing a suit that was sealed tightly, hoping that nobody else would get infected. Everyone seemed to gag at what was in front of there eyes, but somehow they held it all in, and carried on with their work.
Walter, spotting a vomited on wall, starting grabbing samples of the thick slime, all while humming Mary Had a Little Lamb. Peter followed closely behind Olivia, trying to stay clear of dead, oozing bodies, and trying not to get in the way of the other agents.
“It’s worse than I imagined.” Peter frowned.
“Yeah… It’s almost frightening knowing Walter is somewhat at blame for this. I don’t know what we’ve gotten ourselves into Peter.” Olivia sighed. “And I can’t imagine Nina’s reaction when I tell her William Bell had something to do with it as well. Although, I have a hunch she’ll deny it.”
“Listen, we’ll get through this case, just like the rest.” Peter smiled. “Hopefully without electrocuting me, though.” He mumbled.
"That'd probably be best, wouldn't it?" Olivia grinned back.

Chapter Five: VIP

Astrid sat patiently in the lab, waiting for the others to return with something to do. Gene let out a moo in the distance, letting Astrid know she needed yet another stack of hay. She contemplated how she had quickly lost her status as FBI assistant, and was more along the lines of a zoo keeper.
Just then, the trio shot through the large metal doors, rolling in metallic trays filled with evidence. Walter had even managed to snatch some of the Crime Scene tape, which he now had wrapped around his arms.
“Astronaut! Could I get some help over here!?” Walter barked.
Peter rolled his eyes, “Walter, its Astrid. The poor woman isn’t going to help you if she can’t even understand who you’re referring too.”
Astrid sighed, feeling yet again as if she was useless, but hurried to aid Walter.
“What do you need, Dr.Bishop?” She asked, impatiently.
“Could you carry these to the table? I’m afraid it may stress my back.” Walter ordered, rubbing his spine.
Astrid moaned, and sunk her shoulders, but did as she was told… at least this was better than tending to a cow.
Olivia grabbed her coat and looked around for an umbrella, grabbing a red one in the corner.
“Oh! You don’t want to choose that one, Miss Dunham.” Walter laughed. “I’d bet a lot that you’d end up getting hit by lightning.”
Olivia frowned, rubbing her temples, and then grabbed the blue umbrella instead.
“How about this one, Walter?” She asked sarcasticly.
“Perhaps.” Walter called as he ran around the lab grabbing items. His attention span was short lived.
“Olivia, where are you going?” Peter asked, concerned.
“I’m going to go have a word with Nina Sharp. I’m interested to hear what she thinks of this.” She said as she was halfway out the door.
“Be careful, it’s still pouring hard.” Peter called back, but Olivia was already out of earshot.
“My son…I would’ve once believed you had a way with women, but that’s certainly not the case anymore….” Walter chuckled, “Perhaps it’s your moving lifestyle…” Walter hinted once again.
“Enough, Walter.” Peter frowned.

The rain had begun to ease, and the drive would have been easy if it weren’t for Olivia’s constantly drooping eyes. She was in dire need of sleep.
Massive Dynamic seemed to be extra busy for an early Saturday Morning. Olivia couldn’t help but wonder if that had to do with last night’s incident. She parked the car and walked inside, bright blue lights and a fresh new-car smell of the reception area gave the company a much needed innocent look.
“Good morning! Welcome to Massive Dynamic, how can I help you?” The receptionist smiled. Olivia didn’t recognize her from the last few times she had come here.
“Hi, I’d like to have a word with Nina Sharp. Tell her it’s-“
“I’m sorry, ma’am, Miss Sharp isn’t available. Could I take a message and get her to contact you at a better time?”
Olivia frowned, knowing this was a common used line, and that she was positive Nina was upstairs right now, just not wanting to be bothered. But, Olivia had set out to talk to Nina, and that was exactly what she planned on doing.
“Listen…” She glanced at the woman’s nametag, “Chelsea. Now, I have a feeling that you’re new, so I’m going to let this one slide. I’m Agent Olivia Dunham, and I know damn well that Miss Sharp is up in her office, like every Saturday morning. I also know, they you were told to tell that line to anyone that wanted to see her. But I don’t care. I’d like you to get her on the phone, tell her I’m here, and wait for her to say “Bring her up.”. So, Chelsea, why don’t you do that, okay?” She stared coldly into Chelsea’s eyes, trying to intimidate her.
Clearly it had worked, as Olivia watched the girl slowly drop her head, frowning. She didn’t say a word, but picked up the phone and began to dial.
“I’d like to speak to Miss Sharp, please.” Chelsea said calmly into the phone, nervously glancing back at Olivia. “Yes, I know that she isn’t to be disturbed, but it’s important…. Yes, I know that...Fine, just tell her that Olivia Dunham would like to see her this minute…”
Olivia smiled at the girl, patiently. Chelsea gulped, as she met eyes with Olivia again, and started turning a scarlet red.
“You can go up, Miss Dunham” Chelsea said quietly, the cheer gone from her voice. “And I apologize for the inconvenience.”
“Just don’t let it happen again.” She said as she casually walked to the elevator, a smug grin pressed upon her face.

Chapter Six: Massive Liars.

“Ah, Miss Dunham. Long time no see, how are you?” Nina greeted, firmly shaking Olivia’s hand with her good hand.
“I’m doing well, but I’m afraid there’s a couple hundred people right now who aren’t. Matter of fact, they’re dead. Do you happen to know about this?” Olivia frowned, starring at her sharply as she did with the receptionist.
“Well, you sure do cut to the chase, don’t you?” Nina smiled, in almost a mocking manner. “And yes, I do. I had my crew sent out to investigate. Although, we haven’t come up with anything yet at the lab. It’s very odd what happened there.”
“I don’t think it’s very odd to some people here at this company.” Olivia shot at her, she gently placed a hand on her hip.
“What are you implying, Miss Dunham? That my company was involved with this? Surely, you’re mistaken.’’ She said, innocently.
“Actually, I’m not. Are you familiar with Walter Bishop?” Olivia asked.
“Yes I am. You often mention that he has a connection with William Bell, but yet, Mr. Bell won’t see him…” Nina frowned, sarcastically.
“Well, then you should be informed that it was Walter Bishop and William Bell who created that….thing… that happened…Only it’s now in the hands of someone else, and has been modified.”
Nina frowned, looking Olivia directly in the eye. She stood up from her chair, and began to casually pace in front of the giant landscape window in the office. She spoke slowly, as if she were carefully choosing her words.
“Agent Dunham…Walter Bishop was a patient in a mental asylum for seventeen years. You surely mustn’t believe every word that comes out of his mouth. I’m aware he’s not always lucid.” She commented, gently folding her arms. “Now, perhaps Mr. Bell somehow was involved in the creation, which I doubt. But I can assure you, he definitely has not ‘modified’ it, nor does he even have it. There’s no evidence to him even being linked to it.” She finished, a smug grin pressed upon her face.
This battle was not going to be won easy, and Olivia realized that. “Nina, I know William Bell had something to do with this, and when we get the proof… we’ll I’d very much like to speak to him, for once. Until then, I’m going to find out who did this, and I’ll definitely be looking for a link to it and Massive Dynamic.” Olivia replied coldly, as she turned her back and begin to leave.
“Oh, and Miss Dunham?” Nina called.
Olivia took another step before slowly twisting her head back in the direction of Nina, her eyes were dark, and her face seemed twisted in anger. She rose one eyebrow as if to ask ‘what’.
“Good luck with that.” Nina replied, giving out a slight chuckle.

Chapter Seven: Losing Time.

Walter stood crouched over, peering into the microscope. He then looked away, grabbing some chemicals and began to consecutively pour many different coloured liquids into a vile.
He then gently placed the vile under the microscope and stared at it for a few minutes, whistling at the same time.
“Peter! Peter, I think I’ve found out how it’s spread!” Walter shouted across the lab.
Peter and Astrid hurried over.
“It’s so simple, really. It’s just the same as a very progressive cold! Of course, a wee bit altered. Any swapping of body fluids will do the trick, and quickly!” Walter said, rubbing his fingers on his temples.
Suddenly, the door swung open and a drenched Olivia appeared.
“What did Nina say?” Astrid questioned her, as she came to her side with some warm towels.
“Exactly what I expected, she denied it. Said Massive Dynamic didn’t have anything to do with it, and that William Bell certainly didn’t either. Did you guys make any progress here?” she said as she shuddered, and took her soaking jacket off.
“We’ve figured out how it’s spread.” Peter informed her, smiling.
“Like I was saying, it’s spread by the swapping of body fluids, things like kissing and, you know, sexual activities!” Walter grinned, and gave a little wink.
“Oh god… Leave it to Walter to make a sexually transmitted cold.” Peter muttered sarcastically.
“I already told you!” he barked, “I never made this cold…. But now that you mention it, I suppose that would be how my old lab partner, David, gave it to his wife...” Walter chuckled.
Peter rolled his eyes.
“So how does one first get the virus?” Olivia asked, trying to divert Walters’s constantly changing mind.
“They must have injected it to someone…. But they must have given them an antidote, so they didn’t catch it when everyone else did! Like I told you, Peter, it isn’t best to go smooching any random girl at clubs…” Walter chuckled.
“Thanks for the advice, Walter… is it possible you can find a cure?” Peter suggested.
“Oh, quite possibly! Although, it will take a lot more time, and research…”
“Time isn’t something we have. I’m going to talk to Charlie and see if I can find the security tapes for the club… We might not need to find the cure ourselves, if we can get it from the people who made it.” Olivia stated, flipping out her phone.
“That’s a splendid idea, Olivia!” Walter grinned; as he bent his head back down and began examining in the microscope once again.

Once Charlie was aware of the situation, and on the way to locate the security camera footage, Olivia let out a sigh of relief and poured herself a cup of coffee. Peter noticed that she looked stressed and grabbed himself some coffee and joined her.
“How you holding up there?” He asked, sitting down beside her.
She smiled, and ran a hand through her hair, “Well, can’t say it’s been easy going the last couple days…” Her voice trailed off, and her eyes began to blink more frequently.
“Walter did you put sedatives in the coffee, again?” Peter called, his face a solid frown.
“No, son. Perhaps Olivia is just tired. I don’t recall her getting much sleep. I can get… Oyster…Aster…Astrid to get us a cot, if you would like, Agent Dunham.” Walter smiled.
“Thanks, Walter, but I’ll go home after I see that security footage. I don’t like to lose time.”
“Oh, we know.” Peter smirked.
Olivia gave him a grin, “You don’t want me to get started on your habits.”
Peter laughed and shot his hands up, as if surrendering. “Okay, you got me, Agent Dunham. Let’s not get this out of hand.” He joked.
Suddenly, a loud crash filled the room, and Peter, Olivia and Astrid looked over to see a blushing Walter.
“Oopsies. It seems I’ve dropped the microscope. I think it’s safe to say, I’ve shattered it, too.”
“C’mon Walter…” Peter said as he got up and began helping clean up the shattered glass.
Walter smiled, “Thanks, son… Hey, have I ever told you about how protective…or shall I say, un-protective condoms are?”
“Not again, Walter! Please!” Olivia, Peter and Astrid yelled together.

This is a good story. You've managed to capture the feel of an episode of the show and translate it to a written story, which I find very impressive. Your characterisations are very good as well. However I am left wondering why you changed styles part way through your second chapter? You began, as you did in the first chapter, describing events in the present tense (He dances closer..., It rains...) and then changed to the past tense (She leaned on..., He looked...). It's no biggy, it just confused me a little.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next chapter.

Ah, it's all part of the Fringe illusion... haha, no, actually, that was completely a mistake on my part. I usually don't do that, I was just trying to write the opening chapter in a different form than usually, and aparently I carried parts of it along...and I shouldn't have..:confused0006:

Chapter Eight: Strange Sightings

"Can you pause that, Charlie?" Olivia asked, as she stared glued to the computer screen, watching the same scene moving quickly throughout time as the fast-forward button was pressed.
Charlie brought the screen to a halt, and Olivia took another second to take the image in.
The computer screen displayed a parking lot of the auto shop that was located across from the club.
"Do you see that, in the green van?" She asked, and inched her face closer.
"Honestly, Livvy, I can’t." Charlie frowned, looking at her and trying to follow her eyes to whatever got her attention on the computer.
"That...shape in the window. Doesn't it look like a person’s head?"
Charlie squinted his eyes, trying to see how she could take that little smudge in the window as a person. "I don't think it’s a person Liv... That could be anything, and that car was there from the beginning of the footage we have here." He motioned towards an image still in the corner.
Olivia nodded and pressed her lips together. "Are we near the time of the incident?"
Charlie nodded, "And we only have footage of three hours past it. That auto shop really could use a new camera..."
Charlie pressed play once again, and it sped through the day. Olivia just focused on the green van.
"Wait! See that!" Olivia called, pausing the screen and pointing, "The head moved...it's looking out the rear window!"
This time, Charlie saw it, and it did in fact look very much like a person. Suddenly, a feminine body walked towards the car, opened the driver’s door and sped away into the night. Charlie stared bug-eyed, his jaw hanging open wide.
"Look at the time. This was ten minutes before the incident was reported. This is it, Charlie... We've got our killer."

The night was sharp; the air seemed bitter and cold. Olivia walked up her steps, struggling to find the keys in her long jacket pockets. There was a man sitting on the curb across the street, his eyes glued to her every move. Her heart began to beat faster, as she felt him watching her being incapable to be in her safe, warm home. She was really getting nervous now, after checking both pockets in her jacket, she checked her pant pockets. She turned around again, to check on the man watching her, and he was getting up. She felt her body instinctively reach for her gun.
"Your over reacting, Liv. It's just a homeless man. You've seen one before, get a grip."
But even common knowledge seemed off with this one. Suddenly, she remembered leaving her keys on her car seat, and she walked back to it, relieved.
Minutes later, she was getting through her front door, and putting her keys down in a place she wouldn't forget. She hung up her coat, and was distracted by the blinking of her answering machine. She hadn't been home in days, and number on the machine said 17. She made a mental note of that being the most she had ever received. She decided to pour herself a drink before listening to each and every message.

"Hey, Liv, it's me, Rachel. Haven’t talked to you in a few days, and well, that’s unusual for us. Just hope your okay; I know your job has you on your toes, but make some time for family, okay?"

She pressed delete while smiling at her sister’s compassion. She really did miss her.

"Olivia, its Charlie. We searched the license plate number for the green van, it's a rental. It was rented out by a private company, all we know is Daniel Jackson is the guy who’s paying for it. Anyways, get some rest, and we can look into it tomorrow."

She wrote down the name, and made a mental note to ask Charlie which company the van had been rented from.

"Olivia, where the hell are you? It's Rachel, as if you didn't know. Have you been screening my calls or something? I gotta know if you’re still okay with Ella and me coming next week. Call me back, okay!?"

Before finishing the next few messages, Olivia reached for her phone and dialed Rachel's number. Her sister was the closest thing she had to a best friend, and Olivia was so tired of the case, that she was actually in the mood for one of her sister’s heart to heart talks. She stood up; closing the blinds in her living room, but something outside caught her eye. The man from before was there again, and like before, he was staring directly at her. She jerked back, quickly closing the rest of the blinds, as her sister answered the phone.

OliviaIsMyHero, very nice story indeed. I just now got around to reading this so forgive the late response. And since this is my first response, I'll have to comment on the whole story at once. So please forgive the lengthy response as well.:tiphat:
Anyway, having stated that, I like how you started off your story line in chapter one from a common experience that we all share… the evening coming to a close as others settle in but not for those seeking the night life that only a Friday night can bring. We have all been there at one time or another. Anticipating the evening at the end of a long busy work week in hope of venting and relaxing from the doldrums of the work-a-day world. Then from there you go right into someone receiving an injection of some kind and the recipient is a beautiful blue eyed female who has such a high devotion to her man that she would be willing to be his lab rat. Nice hook indeed and your storyline is very descriptive to help give visual imagery to your readers as you take them forward into the next phase of the story and the night club scene. All the chapters were a real treat to read. The story lines, logic flow and thought processes were spot on. You did not bounce all over the place leaving your readers to wonder too much due to having too many loose ends. I liked how you captured Astrid’s mood of feeling like a zoo keeper instead of an FBI agent. I have often wondered how she felt being there. I’m sure that is not what she envisioned when she first joined the FBI academy. And then you had Walter call her Astronaut…that was rich, I loved it! :haha: I also liked how you started out that chapter with a bit of quiet reflection from one of the main characters before the next scene exploded into focus. That was a great dynamic redirection which helped to further solidify the readers attention. I also like how you used the continued use of rain and how it affected the mood of the atmosphere…a sort of metaphoric fore bearing hanging in the air like a fog. I loved the dialogue you set up between Olivia and Chelsea the receptionist. I actually felt a bit sorry for Chelsea,..the poor girl was just doing her job. That’s the kind of emotional grip and attachment I like to feel when reading a story…good job. :happy15: I like how you ended chapter eight with a bit of suspense.

Just a small bit of criticism, if you don’t mind, but watch some of your spelling.... there were only a few however. :reader: But having said that, I like your writing style and expressions. The chapter titles were very appropriately named as well and as Fringified commented…you have definitely captured the character’s personalities.:party0011:

On a side note: are you a Stargate fan? Because Daniel Jackson is a character on that sci-fi series. One of my other favorite shows. :D

Overall you have another fan now…keep up the good work!:happy15: :highfive: :cool2: :bravo:

Oh, wow. That was one amazing comment! Thank you very, very much.
I'm not posting a chapter, as my storieson a bit of a hiatus, as is the show, just so I can get ahead by a few chapters.
I'll be sure to look out for my spelling, my spell check still doesn't catch everything, and sometimes, I get lazy. :o
Glad you liked the Chelsea and Olivia reaction, it was actually one of my favourite parts to write.

Also, I'm actually not a Stargate fan...that was totally fluke! :haha:

Once again, thanks for the comment, and I'm so flattered that you like it!

Thank you jn6251, also!

Chapter Nine: Zombie in Danger.

The bright morning sun shined in through her window onto the comforter, heating her tired body up just enough to wake her. Olivia sighed as she forced one eye open into her empty room. Instantly, her eye drifted to the window that she had tried very hard not to think about that night. She was curious as to if there would be that same man there, watching her with those dark eyes. She turned her head to her nightstand, where her gun rested and felt a little more relaxed. She rolled back over and pulled the covers over her head, for once she gave herself a break and began to slowly drift back to sleep.
Her sleep lasted only mere minutes when a loud knocking came from her front door, sending her heart pulsing way too fast. She pulled off her blankets, slipped her gun in the back of her pants and pulled a light gray sweater over her pajama top, and prepared herself for whoever had enough guts to come over before calling.
She peeked out the front blinds and noticed two things; the strange man watching her was no longer around, and Peter was at her door, and he looked more nervous than ever.
Olivia yanked open the door just as Peter began to franticly knock again.
“Olivia… Oh, thank god your home. Listen, we’ve got a bad situation…and it’s all my fault.” He blurted out quickly.
“What’s wrong? What’s happened? Where’s Walter, is he alright? And Astrid?” Olivia found herself suddenly asking question after question, and she remembered Walter referring to her as a Question Machine.
“They’re all fine.. for now. I think this would be better if I come inside…”
“Oh, yeah. C’mon in.” She watched Peter walk quickly inside, heading straight to her living room. She looked back at the door and locked each latch carefully.
“Listen, remember how I told you before I had gotten in some trouble, owed some money?” Peter began, as he shifted nervously on the couch.
Olivia nodded and he went on, “Well, I got into some more trouble… I threatened a guy a little while ago... Now, he’s got some people after me, and…you.”
“Me? Why?” She questioned.
“They think…Well, they think harming you would intentionally harm me. At least that’s what I think. I guess they’ve been watching me, and have seen you, and just thought…”
She didn’t need him to finish the sentence, it was all too predictable. She had seen stuff like that all the time in the FBI. Don’t go after the person; go after the ones they care about.
“How do you know all this Peter?”
“A friend of mine… He works with them, but we’ve always been closer with me. He just told me keep an eye out.” Peter said.
Olivia sighed, “Peter, last night… There was a man outside my house just watching me, I would look out the window, and he’d have his eyes locked on me. Do you…Do you think that he was after me?”
Peter shrugged, “I don’t know. But Walter has made up his mind that our room is bugged. I really don’t think it is, but trust me, when Walter gets an idea in his head, it doesn’t leave.”
Olivia smiled, “I’m probably going to regret saying this, but… You and Walter are welcome to stay here for a while.”
Peter chuckled, “No, no… We’ll just stay at the lab for a bit. In the meantime, just stay safe, okay?”
“Don’t worry about me, Peter. I’m an FBI agent, and one that has seen her fair share of crazy, recently.”
“I know that… And I’m trying to get my whole ‘mess’ taken care of…I’m just really sorry I had to get you involved.” He said, swiftly touching his hand on hers.
“Peter, I’ve been involved in your mess from the moment I met you in Iraq. I also remember you saying, ‘Be careful what you wish for.’. ”
Peter grinned, “Alright. Well, I’m going to go back to the Lab… Walter wants me to pick up coffee cake on the way over.” He rolled his eyes, “Oh, and get some more sleep, okay, Olivia? You look like a zombie.”
Olivia blushed as she watched him walk towards his car, she then glanced towards the mirror, and was somewhat startled by her reflection… She really did need to get more sleep.

Nice descriptive interlude between Olivia and Peter. The suspense of the mystery stalker coupled with Peter’s new troubling predicament helps to add more intrigue to your overall story. I like how, with that, you have now created a secondary side story to run in conjunction with your main plot. I can’t wait to read more. :happy15:

Chapter Ten: Close to Closed Case.

Another day had gone by, and the case hadn’t progressed one bit. Olivia frowned as she typed away on the computer at Headquarters, looking into Daniel Jackson and the car he had rented. She couldn’t find any profile that had rented a car, and she suspected it was under a false name.
“Livvy, can I talk to you?” She peered up to see Charlie calling her from a few feet away.
She got up and followed him to his office.
“What’s up?” She asked, as she closed the door behind her.
“I just received call that there’s been another incident.” Charlie replied.
Olivia’s eyes shot open, a frown formed on her face.
“This one’s different. Police busted the lab, and bodies similar to the ones in the club were everywhere. But when they took a look around, they realized that was where the virus was created. So clearly, something went wrong, and they all died except for the person who they got it from, which is probably the same person who gave it to everyone in the night club.”
Olivia stood, stunned. The case had almost solved itself in just one day, right when she thought it was going nowhere.
“Oh, and among the bodies of the people in the lab was a Daniel Jenson. He also fits the profile that the owner of the Auto shop gave us of Daniel Jackson. I’d say we’ve almost solved this case.”
“Not yet. Whoever is infected is still out there, and they could be giving the virus off, again. I’m just curious as to why they would kill whoever they were working with…” Olivia pondered.
“Maybe they didn’t, Liv. Maybe it was just an accident.” Charlie stated.
Olivia nodded. “Wait. If they found the lab… does that mean they have a cure?”
“Forensics’ is checking it out as we speak, but they think so, yes.” Charlie answered.
“That’s good. I’ve got to call Peter and Walter.” Olivia smiled.

“Bishop’s house of horrors. Peter speaking.”
Olivia grinned, “Peter, it’s me. Listen, I’ve got great news.”
“You’re bringing Cotton Candy?” Walter asked, clearly having picked up another phone somewhere in the lab.
“Walter! Hang up!” Peter barked.
“No, no, its okay, Peter. Walter needs to hear this.” Olivia said.
“Coffee Cakes?” Walter asked.
“No, it’s about the case…They’ve found a cure to the ‘killer cold’.” Olivia stated.
“Really, that’s great. But how?” Peter asked.
“The same thing that happened at the club happened at the lab where the cold was regenerated. And apparently they have a cure… But nobody in the lab had actually been given it, expect for the person who has the virus.”
“Wow. So it’s all cleared up then?” Peter asked.
“No…we don’t know where the person with the virus is, yet.”
“Excellent news! Now perhaps I can get a hold of this cure, and re-alter it, so that when you find the person with the cold, we can cure them!” Walter barked.
“Can you really do that, Walter?” Olivia asked.
“Oh, of course! The only hard part was coming up with the cure itself…Changing it shall be easy!”
“Alright, I’ll be at the lab soon… I just have to stop off at Massive Dynamic first.” Olivia said.
“Oh, did you find a connection?” Peter asked.
“A bigger one than I hoped for.” Olivia grinned, as she hung up her phone and hurried to her car.

Chapter Eleven: Honesty is the Best Policy

“Miss Dunham, what a pleasure it is to see you again!” Chelsea grinned as Olivia walked into the lobby of Massive Dynamic.
“I’d like to speak to Nina again, if it isn’t a problem.” She smirked at the last few words of her sentence.
“Oh, of course not! Go right up.” Chelsea smiled.
“Thanks.”

“Olivia Dunham, welcome back. What can I help you with this time?” Nina greeted, pleasantly.
“Well, remember when I said I would find a link to Massive Dynamic and the case I was working on? Well I did.” Olivia snapped.
“Oh, really? Well, let’s see then.” Nine smiled, but her brow slowly turned to a frown.
“Do you recall a certain employee by the name of Daniel Jenson?” Olivia asked, pulling out a picture from her pocket.
Nina looked carefully at Olivia, and then at the picture. “Actually, doesn’t really ring a bell.”
“That’s funny, because the bell it should be ringing is William Bell. You see, Mr. Jenson here worked closely with Mr. Bell on possible treatments for minor viruses. Things like…hm, colds.”
Nina looked worried, but she remained stern as she locked eyes with Olivia. “And when was this, Miss Dunham?”
“About twenty years ago. Also, according to my file, Mr. Bell fired Daniel Jenson shortly afterwards, claiming he had become obsessed with a project that was clearly going nowhere. Now, this is when I’m guessing that Mr. Bell went to Walter Bishop. Eventually, the whole thing became forgotten about… But not by Daniel Jenson. He broke into the lab awhile later, stealing the virus and then regenerating it.”
“Olivia, just because Mr. Bell worked with Mr. Jenson, doesn’t mean that it was with this. It also doesn’t prove in the least bit that he worked with Dr. Bishop. Now, I’ll admit it does seem likely that Mr. Bell worked with Mr. Jenson in something similar, which is how he got the idea… But I’m telling you Massive Dynamic and William Bell did not have anything to do with any virus.”
“Really? Because when we investigated the lab where the virus was created, we found many supplies that can only be purchased from Massive Dynamic. Such things that have only been created in the past couple years… Which means Daniel Jenson is a client of yours. Either way, Miss Sharp, Massive Dynamic will be hearing from my offices. Good day.” Olivia smiled, as she headed to leave.
Nina sighed, “Good day, Agent Dunham.”

Thank you for reading Cold To The Touch. Chapter Twelve 'Busted' is sponsered by STRATAGEM (http://fringe-forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2231) written by 'Fringified'. Read what is quickly becoming a new sensation, today, in the Library section here at Fringe-Forum.

EDIT: This will be the final chapter.

Chapter Twelve: Busted.

Once again Olivia found herself getting lost in thought as she drove home through the rain. She noticed it was suddenly always rainy and miserable, and she felt a strong urge to just keep driving until she came to a place warm and sunny. She quickly shook the impulsive thought, and got her mind back on the still unsolved case.
The rhythmic sound from the constant movement of the vehicles windshield wipers began to set her at ease, and she found her eyes blinking more rapidly, she felt weary and would much rather be curled up in her blankets then in this rain. She still lacked a lot of rest, and she pondered as to whether rest would help her with the case. Maybe with a clean slate for a mind she could get in this so-called killers head and find the answers to this thing. She quickly flipped on her turn signal as she spun around and headed back towards her street, seeming more focused and alert with that destination in mind.
She was halfway there when she heard a buzzing in the back of the SUV. She turned around suddenly to see her phone spinning around on the leather seat; she extended an arm and pulled the phone towards her.
“Dunham.”
“It’s Broyles.” The flat-tone gave away enough as it was, “We need you to come back in. And fast. We’ve got our suspect, and to be honest, I’m almost certain this is the woman who has infected everyone.”
Olivia knew by now not even to reply back, as she was sure he had already hung up, but she noted to herself that it was probably the longest phone conversation she had ever had with him. She spun the car around again, and this time inserted a CD, and turned it up loud. She was going to stay awake and finally go and close the case.

“Her name’s Lucy Rowan, police caught her at Al’s Car Rental after she tried to take out a car in Daniel Jenson’s name. So far we can’t get her to say anything, but we haven’t really interrogated her yet, we’ve been waiting for you.” Charlie informed Olivia as she stood looking through the one way glass at the young, beautiful woman sitting sadly in handcuffs.
“Is she contagious?” Olivia asked.
“Were not sure, which is why were going to put on suits when we go in there.” Charlie stated.
“What about the policemen who picked her up, are they okay?” Olivia said as she grabbed a big white suit.
“They’re fine. Apparently it’s through sharing saliva, but we don’t want to take the risk of being spit on or something like that.” Charlie replied, as she began to step in a matching suit.
“Good point.”
Olivia zipped up the last zipper of the suit, and reached for the door to the room where Lucy was being held. The pale-faced woman glanced at them in wonder, as her face began to fill up with sadness, Olivia wondered if maybe Charlie was right about her killing her team as an accident.
“Lucy Rowan, I’m Agent Francis, and this is Agent Dunham. I think it’s time we really talked, and time you cooperate.” Charlie called to her, as his voice sounded muffled from the suit.
Lucy just stared blankly ahead; her bright blue eyes seemed to glow as her eyes flickered around the room, acting completely oblivious to both of them.
“Lucy, you know a Daniel Jenson… don’t you?” Olivia asked, loudly placing her hand on the table. She watched as Lucy winced at the name.
“Ah. A friend of yours… Co-worker... Partner is crime? Well, clearly not anymore, seeing as you killed him.” Olivia smirked.
“You don’t know the half of it.” Lucy grumbled.
Olivia felt proud that she was getting to Lucy.
“Your right, I don’t. But what I do know is that everyone in that lab is dead because of you… which leaves you as a murderer no matter what. So, whatever did happen in that lab… all leads back to the blame of you.”
“I didn’t…mean.” Lucy stammered.
“You didn’t mean what, Lucy? You didn’t mean to kill the people you cared about? Maybe not, but you did mean to kill everyone in that club. So, yet again, we have you to blame for that one. So Lucy, if you don’t want to take the blame, you better talk now… or else you’ll take the heat for whatever your little lab partners did… especially since you killed them.”
As Olivia shot out her final word, a look of anger spread across Lucy’s face, she sprung up from her chair, bashing down her cuffed fists on Olivia’s head. In a swift motion quickly following, Charlie had his gun aimed straight at Lucy’s head.
Olivia felt dizzy, angry and somewhat frightened all at once, as she felt Charlie’s hand on her shoulder.
“You okay, Olivia?”
“I’m…fine.”
Lucy stared Olivia in the eye as she took in a deep breath, her fist shaking from rage and fear.
“Daniel Jenson was my boyfriend. I was helping him… It was a ‘don’t ask questions’ type of situation. I helped him out, killed those people… I never really had a conscience, anyway. But then, I went to tell him how I helped him, and I was so caught up, I… I kissed him…and I…I didn’t know he never had injected himself with the cure. And I…I killed him. And then of course, I was going to rent that car…and just run. But I don’t know why Daniel wanted to kill those people, why he wanted the revenge… I just don’t know.”
Olivia smiled to herself. She had got her confession.
“Thank you, Lucy.” She breathed as she slowly walked out of the room, her hand softly resting on her pulsing head.

-------------

Yet another day was almost done, but this time Olivia felt satisfied with the way things had turned out. She sat in her house, a bag of ice rested on her head and a glass of wine in her other hand. Flipping through the channels, she stopped on the news when a picture of Lucy had quickly flashed upon the screen.
"This just in; A woman was arrested and charged for the deaths of those who died tragiclly at the Krypto Nite Club just a few days ago. At this time we are unaware if she had an accomplice, but luckily this will provide a lot of relief to all those who were devasted by the great loss."

Suddenly, Olivia's doorbell rang, making her jump. She opened the door to find Peter smiling.
"I was just driving to the hotel, when I heard the news. You did great today, Olivia."
She felt herself blush, but tried to smile it off. "Thank you."
"But listen, thats not the only reason why I'm here..." His voice became for serious now, and Olivia hoped he was some how out of trouble.
"Now, I don't want to make false promises or anything...but the people after me... You won't..shouldn't...need to worry about them anymore. I just.... it's taken care of." He finished.
"For you aswell?" Olivia asked, feeling like a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
"Not exactly..but... It's a work in progress... I don't know, honestly." He sighed.
She, too, sighed. "Peter... You know I could get you some help..the FBI..."
"Trust me, Olivia, I'd get dragged down just as much as they would then." Peter said.
"Alright.... Just be careful." She paused, and then shrugged, "Hey, I've got a bottle of wine already open, and I was about to watch the news. Would you like to come in for a drink and some TV?"
He grinned, "You know me... I'm always up for drinks."

As the sun went down and everyone was alright, and there seemed to be a moment of calm from all the madness, Olivia felt truly at ease.
But little did anyone know... That as Peter and Olivia laughed over a glass of wine, and Walter snored away in his bed, Broyles staying late at work, and even Lucy, alone in her dark cell... there actually was even more turmoil happeneing at that moment. Another event involving the pattern, and when they awoke many, many people would be dead.

THE END ?

Wow... Epic chapter of Cold to the Touch, OIMH. I don't know how you do it, but you manage to capture the character's personalities so well and then convey them into your story. In past chapters, you have given us the wonderful humor of Walter and Peter, and many of the things we like best about the show.

Also, 3 chapters left

Does that mean the next chapter is the last?
