------------

Lance Reddick has collaborated with JJ Abrams on two successful projects, portraying Matthew Abaddon in Lost and Agent Phillip Broyles in Fringe.

We caught up with him to find out what's in store for the paranormal investigators as the show returns.

You've appeared in The Wire, Lost and Fringe... How does it feel to be a part of such cult, critically acclaimed shows?
I feel extremely lucky to have landed such high-profile and interesting roles. To have a career based in television working on such great shows is incredibly charmed.

If you had to describe Fringe in three words, what would they be?
I'm going to go with mysterious, satisfying and action-packed. These are the best words to sum up Fringe, ingredients that appeal to everyone.

Why do you think it has been such a success?
Fringe has made such an impact because it's pure entertainment. Emotionally and visually, it hits all the right buttons. It hooks people with its ongoing mysteries, juggling so many different elements: every time an answer is given, more intriguing questions are raised.

How would you describe your character, Agent Phillip Broyles?
The first word that comes to mind is stoic. In some ways, Broyles is similar to Daniels, the character I portrayed in The Wire. Although their personalities aren't the same and their respective worlds removed, their form and function are pretty similar. I have to add that Broyles is way more hard-ass.

Have you ever experienced anything strange, almost otherworldly?
I know I have, but I can't put my finger on it. It's not on the level of X-Files or Fringe; I haven't encountered any rapidly ageing newborns. My experiences have been of the serendipitous kind.

What's your favourite moment of the series so far and why?
It has to be the episode after Olivia's abduction. She escapes the clutches of her captors in a kick-ass way and it's just an incredible sequence.

Are we likely to see the return of your character, Matthew Abaddon, to Lost?
Well, the last time we saw him, he was shot and presumed dead. I don't know whether he'll return and that's the truth. The writers keep their cards to their chests, but you never know. Lost can't be second-guessed.

What attracts you to JJ Abrams' work?
The sole reason is that working with JJ Abrams is fun. The shows are fun to do and watch.

Do you think today's audiences like to be challenged by what they watch?
Contrary to popular Hollywood notions, the success of shows like Fringe, Lost and The Wire proves that people are hungry for this kind of entertainment. For the most part, mainstream American television and cinema trains people to have short attention spans. Deep down though, human beings are interested in the complex and thought-provoking.

Awesome, cheers for that.

I don't know why, but that made me laugh!
