View Full Version : Doesn't make sense

They explained the pattern somewhat on this episode but it doesn't seem to make sense.

It was said that scientific experiments create soft spots in the world, experiments like the ones we see in Fringe, an example being the ones that Walter does and has conducted. This is fine except it is then stated that these soft spots are what cause the mysterious occurances. This can't be true as we have seen many times that the mysterious occurances are explained by fringe science and are infact experiments themselves. How can sceintific experiments cause soft spots which cause these 'mysterious cases' aka scientific experiments. The two statements made on the show contradict each other don't they?

I hope that makes sense to someone, I've thought and thought about it and it seems like a giant contradiction.

As far as I understood it; there were naturally occurring 'soft spots' where the deterioration makes it easier to travel between worlds. Then this Pattern has simple accelerated and increased the frequency of the soft spots.

If you think about it; the Bermuda Triangle which was mentioned has been talked about for decades before any of The Pattern begun. You've also got another mention that 'Incident Zero' was Walter creating a rift to jump across and get Peter.

I completely understand what you are saying there, what it was is that the pattern as I understood it is a series of mysterious occurances which are later exlpained by fringe science in the cases you see in the series. It is stated that this Fringe science or the Pattern has increased these soft spots but it is immediately stated afterwards that the Pattern is a result of these soft spots. Both cannot be true can they? that fringe science experiments created more soft spots and then moments later the soft spots are said to create the unexplained cases that have been noticed (which is actually examples of fringe science).

Since the number of soft spots has increased where the fundamentals of science on earth as we know them are deteriorating it's becoming easier and easier to experiment on these 'fringe' sciences that exist as The Pattern.

Well, that's what I took from it. Basically that the soft spots are exasperating The Pattern.

i.e. Walter created the rift over a decade ago. In that time the fundamental science that should exist there (gravity, speed of light, etc) has deteriorated to lesser states; now it's easier to perform further methods of fringe science in that location because of that.

Thank you! I have been racking my brains trying to come up with something that fits both statements and that does it completely! Soft spots are where science breaks down thus allowing more fringe science experiments which in turn cause more soft spots and so it carries on.
Thank you again!

As I said, it's just what I took from it. Someone else might pop in this thread later and explain it in a far better fashion.

It just struck me as an idea since they went back to the football (soccer..) field to try to open up the portal to the other universe, when that's where the plane with the guy who turned into a beast crashed.

So the soft spots... they became more and more soft... until someone/something can freely pass through them. Making it easy to start a war...

That's the bit I stopped following the idea of soft spots completely, at. There are already people who can freely pass between. We've seen Olivia in the previous episode switching between our universe and the alternative universe.

Or at least her concious mind switching between worlds?

I'm also assuming that Walter tore open the dimension using his original machine which probably had some side affects and this is why Walter is the way he is whereas using the machine we saw in this episode, it just teases a soft spot open so people can cross without side affects. This is just my theory though :). So far the only people we have seen crossing are those that had been treated with that drug (I forgot the name sorry) and kids, I think Walter states kids can cross without side effects. I think the machine that we saw this episode doesn't really tear open dimensions like Walters original machine did, I think it just opens existing tears or soft spots in the dimension, allowing crossings without any ill effects.

Wasn't it said in the episode? Because I sort of remember it...

I did not mean "the special" ones, but more the ones, who will fight in the war.
