*clears throat*

Trying to figure out things to do and play with for the next *sniff* 3 months, I went through 'favorite tv programs' and noticed skibopple and me both watch HBO's "True Blood". It starts June 14th and finishes about the time "Fringe" starts again.

Tonight, June 1st, Alan Ball talks about the first season. Beginning June 4th, HBO will show 3 episodes on some nights (there are 12 in season 1). It's also available for download on Itunes and Amazon, either 2-3 dollars an episode if you'd like to try it out.

I hope anyone interested will watch just 2 episodes before deciding if it's for you or not. I spent almost the entire 3rd episode biting my fingernails and the 4th episode had me sold. The best description I can give is that it's a very stylized, funny, very adult (ie, sex) view of vampires. There's nudity, but more funny than offensive.

Season 2 begins Sunday, June 14th, at 8pm Central.

I was a fan of Buffy, Angel, Moonlight, and the vampire genre in general.
I've read the Twilight books and liked them very much, although I referred to the Cullen family as "Swiss Family Vampire" because they were very "G" rated compared to some vampire stories I'd read in the past.
Alan Ball admits this is his first foray into vampire lore until he picked up a copy of Charlaine Harris' "Dead until Dark" series. The Deep Southern feel of the show gives it a supernatural feel by itself. I haven't read the books, but I became very fond of the tv show.

It's not science fiction, but there are compelling facets to the story. In a nutshell, it's about a young waitress in the Deep South who is also a mind reader, more of a curse to her than a blessing.

In the first scene serving dinner, she 'hears' a kid saying he needs to get out of this podunk town. She says, "Well you better do it soon, or you'll stay one year, then another, then, before you know it, this is all you know." [Grossly paraphrased, sorry, Mr. Ball] The boy stares up at her, thinking, "Did I say that out loud?", and she skitters off, playing the fool she's learned to hide behind.

The fun part is that a couple of years before this scene, the Japanese have come up with a way to make synthetic blood. And because of that, for the first time in history, vampires have "come out of the closet" and into society. And shortly after the scene above, the first vampire to come to Merotte walks into the bar. His family had a plantation there during the Civil War and he's come back to make a home for himself.

That's all I want to give away (which happens in the first 15 minutes anyway). He's slowly introduced, then other, very different vampires and very different forms of life are introduced.

It's a fun ride. And could be a good segue into the fall, "For Your Consideration." :o

Yvaine, what an ending, Huh. :)

I've taken up the last 4 episodes, finally. The show is really cool. There is a very adult theme, that's for sure. I like the underlying humor.

This is based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series of books, by the way. :)

I second EVERYTHING Cathy904 says! LOVE this show! People should definitely check it out!

I wasn't sure what to make of it after the first episode as I found it a bit 'in-your-face'/'going for the shock factor' at first but maybe I'm just a bit of a prude and anyway I came to my senses pretty quick! ;) AWESOME show!

P.S. Just one more thing to add.....:bench_warm:
there you go that's better! :D

Yes, if the audiences can recover from Jason Stackhouse's sexual exploits , they may get caught up in the drama/comedy.
I remember seeing the first episode, thinking, "OMG, they're not going to do this every show, I hope!" :haha:

Yvaine, I hope you liked the ending as much as I did!

I was trying to find a specific preview, but at cursory glance there's only this barage of images and music.Check out the individual perspectives, beginners might start with Bill, Eric and Sookie. Not a bad impression of the show, actually. Don't forget, Season 1 review starts with 3 shows a night June 4th.

OMG....

i just started watching this show (which was a mistake as i am waaaay to busy to get involved in another show) and i can't even stop myself from going to the next episode even though i have an INSANE amount of work to do!

SO good :D
can't even believe it took me this long to watch it :(

That's AWESOME! It's a perfect show to help us get through the summer and Not chew our mouses *waves at lezario*

It IS a crazy show. Vampire enthusiasts were sniffing at first when Alan Ball said he'd never seen any vamp shows, but, he REALLY brings it. Every show ends in a cliffhanger. I'm tickled you like it. :goodvibes: Pretty soon we can start a Bill vs. Eric fan thread, they get NUTS. (I'm a Bill fan, but there's plenty to enjoy about The Vampire Sherrif of Area 5)

Oooh YEAY! So glad you like! :D I know exactly what you mean about getting into things at the wrong time! I've developed a knack for getting attached to shows when I really shouldn't e.g. when I'm supposed to be revising!! But to be fair there are only 12 episodes of the first series so it shouldn't take you that long to get through it! :D ... or should I not be encouraging you? Sorry!

WOW! Never seen a vamp show? and he created that? WOW! I'm impressed! I really love the dark/broody atmosphere of the whole show! LOVE Bill! Love how he wants to be good but walks very close to the line sometimes like with killing the Rat-trays (sp?) I quite like Eric too but it's Bill and Sookie all the way for me! :D

Jason Stackhouse makes me laugh so much! Still can't believe he used to be Vinnie in Home & Away! I used to love his character! So different now!

Cathy, I finally finished the last remaining episodes!

The finale sure was interesting. But is that really the end of poor LaFayette? Stephen Moyer has been hinting he is dead. I liked him, he's funny. Could Bill have killed him? He did tell Sookie he fed, that's why he healed?

Cathy904

MAJOR concern. The books (I've been told) says Lafayette dies at the beginning of the second book. But Tara was only very small part of the books. Don't know what's going to become of Lafayette. He's in several of the promos, though, so there's hope.

"Quick, drink before the wound closes!"
"Will I be a vampire?"
"You won't be! G*dd*mnit, Sookie do you want to live or not?"

What a scene! The swamp, the music, the lighting by the river, it's a treat to see this after so long.

Awwww, if that's the case, then, that's just sad. I liked that character. :)

Don't give up hope, Really. Alan Ball's deviated a bit from the books, I for one think Bill will stay a leading character. He starts out that way in the books, but gets relegated to the background. And the Eric fans, oh my gosh, they're beating drums for the show to stay true to the book and have Sookie hook up with Eric, and the Bill fans want nothing of it! Plenty of reason to hope both scenarios won't play out in the show like the books. One reason I don't read the books, but that's another conversation. :D

The walk back to the car after the brutal attack and startling blood sharing. They both have blood on their face and clothes but it comes off like a charming boy meets girl scene, says a lot for the show atmosphere.

And that courtship walk. Oh my goodness, again. I could smell the sunlight on her skin, too. :haha:

yvaine
06-04-2009, 09:13 PM
Yeah, I heard that in the book, Bill gets another girl, and Eric and Sookie become an item. It's a bit more interesting in the show, with Sam and Sookie. LOL. But Eric is just sooooo intriguing.

Aha, the beginning of the Eric fans! They're a crrrraaaaaazy bunch!
I was charmed that, at the Paley event, Alexander Skarsgard was reported to oblige every fan who wanted a picture or autograph. That was almost enough for me to jump ship from Bill/Sookie to Eric/Sookie.

But not really, or not yet, at least! :haha:

Callling all Vampire/True Blood Fans! Season Two starts this Sunday. Sunday is the Worst day for me, I usually go to bed early that night, but Season One had me seriously Hooked.

9p Eastern, 8p Central Time Sunday. :hope: :hope: I hope this starts out as crazy as it ended. That 'child' of Bill's, she's going to be a Terror, if the Finale was any indication! :haha: And it's supposed to follow some plot points of "Dead in Dallas", which I'll get a big kick out of, I'm just down the road from Dallas, compared to the world-wide audience around here. I don't read the books, though, and am trrrryyyyying to stay out of TB spoilers. I was a regular ole Spoiler Ho 1st season! :ashamed0001: :haha: (season@[/SPOILER)

ha ha I was just about to post and you beat me to it! Yeay! How good was that!!! Loved it! Lafayette's still alive! Yeay! SO excited! I got a bit bored with the Jason stuff - he was one of my favourite last season but I'm all mehhh now! Loved Eric getting his highlights done too! How funny!!

Well, okay, here's my first impressions (I'm a big Bill fan, and I always love Sookie),

Don't read further unless you've seen the episode.

Yes, I made it! Seven months later, I had high hopes for the season premiere, and it did NOT disappoint!

Lafayette's still alive! WooHoo! :party0011: :party0011:

Jessica calmed down a little bit, yea for that, too. I was really impressed with her when we first met her, both during the turning, and when she was sensuously running around the woods with her new vampires senses. I'm glad Bill and Sookie were able to calm her down a little, or at least compromise with her. I'm looking forward to more of her. I was intrigued what Bill said, "Two-thirds of new vampires don't make it past the first year."

And Bill! Bill was back in full force! *swoon!* When Sookie asked him if Jessica might have had anything to do with Miss Jeanette's death, his inflection on, "No!.....probably not." cracked me up. Stephen Moyer, I've missed you! Stephen Moyer's eyes, when Sookie's eyes were tearing up, and she said, "Say something", and He Did. That was lovely. I'd forgotten all about Uncle Bartlett! http://thebluewhalepub.com/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif I'm SOOO glad that wasn't going to be a deep dark secret between them. The last lovemaking scene was, "Oh, yeah, this is HBO all right!" http://thebluewhalepub.com/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif But it was excellently done.

And you Viking Whordes, it was awesome to see Eric again, and like that! He might pose as the metrosexual, but there's a very dangerous animal underneath that tanktop (now ya'll can swoon! http://thebluewhalepub.com/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif )
Another sherrif's been killed. oooooooooooooo..........

That dungeon! And the final death of the redneck was so well done. I was thinking, why is Lafayette down there? Then, I remembered, uh oh, dealing vamp blood. I hope a 'consenting vamp' clause will come and save him *crossing fingers*.

In the previews, when Lafayette says 'turn me', I don't know if I really want Lafayette to be a vamp. Sure, he could pile camp on top of vamp camp, but I guess I'll have to see. But he's still in the story for now, Yea!

I loved the final song (c'mon, HBO, get it all on one TIVO recording, please!). Jason seems like he's about to step onto yet another slippery slope. I like seeing Hoyt Fortenberry again, as always. It's nice to see someone who's 'normal'. Marianne. What in blazes is she up to? I think I have an idea, and it's a mix bag of surprises. I loved it when she told off Tara's mother like that, somebody needed to do that. But what price is Tara going to pay for her 'freedom'? Marianne slapping that mysterious assistant-guy around, hmmmm.
Sam, Sam, Sam. What is going to happen with you?

Great first episode!

skibopple, there's a Big Spoiler out there about Lafayette, don't read unless you Really Want to Know. It's going to happen soon, anyway.

Eric's going to turn Lafayette and they're going to have "some" kind of relationship, more than the Bill/Jessica relationship, and more like the Eric/Pam relationship.

I've just been all atwitter with anticipation, I can't wait.

While I was getting ready for work this morning, my husband and I had a laugh over Vampire Bill. "Avenging Vampire" is pretty cool, but "Recycling Vampire?" :haha:

Did you watch it? How good was that?!!! Even better than last week's episode I thought! Layfayette is sooo awesome! I loved the whole Jessica-Sookie-Bill storyline especially the line 'Won't you please come in, sir?' - A-MA-ZING! Did you see Marianne's face when she heard Sookie ask Tara to move in with her? She was NOT happy! Eeek! Can't wait!

I have to say though, I'm really struggling with this series - I watched the first series in one go so I didn't have to wait every week to watch the next episode! This is just torture! I want it to be next sunday already! I'll have wished my summer away in no time!!!! Can't wait for next week!

Yes, the story arcs are taking off now in a couple of different directions. I'm thinking Bill just glamoured Jessica's family but oooo he was mad, "Shut up!", a little out of character for him. The second book's title is "Dead In Dallas", Eric's already said the Sherriff of Dallas is missing, so, there should be a road trip to Dallas soon. It should be a hoot. Clever way they came up with to let Alexander have his own natural hair length, huh? "Is there blood in my hair?" :haha:

I'm thinking when Sookie read Marianne's mind she heard the spell that gives Marianne her form. When Marianne threw the spell that forced Sam to shapeshift, she looked like that "tv flickering" picture that she does when she's not concentrating on how she looks, or trying to cast some other spell. That's my theory, anyway....

I'll bet it was more fun having the whole season in a marathon, but now you'll just have to die the little deaths we go through each week as the series is built on a weekly cliffhanger! :haha: I've been told that's also how the chapters in the books are done.

They've already made a connection between Marianne and the Mycenean period, an ancient Greek time to even the ancient Greeks. I was trying to look up the background of "Daphne", the name of the new waitress who's terrible at her job, it's Greek origin also, and indicates a young chaste maiden. It could be a long shot, but Daphne could be there to eventually reign in Marianne, who looks like she's going to get out of control soon. Anyway, somebody at Wikipedia has the episode synopses up for the next couple of episodes that haven't aired yet. It doesn't give a lot away, but I'll let you decide if you want to cross over into spoiler ho-dom! :haha:

I haven't read the books, but I've not read them only because I want to be surprised at Alan Ball's developments. He's said the plot is 50% book-related and 50% original material from him and his 3 writers.

The book readers are a militant bunch. They're insistant on something developing between Sookie and Eric, and us Bill/Sookie fans are resisting.
:hope: Hopefully Mr. Ball will keep Bill and Sookie together. Bill is so cool, right now he's terribly harried between 'raising' Jessica for her first year as a vampire, and now Sookie and him are going to Dallas to investigate the disappearance of Godric, whom Eric said is 2000 years old. Rumor has it another reason Eric's so worried about Godric is that Godric is Eric's Maker. So There! Another possible Spoiler for you! :haha: Tara and Lafayette were very minor characters in the books I've been told. And Bill was also a minor character in the books, but I want him to stay a principal character with Sookie, so that would be a character elevation.

The Eric fans (also known as the Viking Whorde :haha:, they named themselves) are tickled that he's supposed to be in 12 episodes this season, so he'll be taking a much bigger role in what goes on with Sookie.

One of the favorite pictures from Season one,

Oh, and in case you didn't know, I saw the 3rd episode and wrote a novella about it under "Scratches" :haha:

Please, add your two cents. I didn't even get into Jason's story at all and I only touched on Sam's story.

No waaaay! How can Bill be a bit part in the books?! He's awesome! As you can probably tell, I'm a Bill fan all the way!

I have to say though - since Eric has been in more of the show this season I'm starting to like him a bit more! Love it when he got his fangs out for Sookie but Bill turned him down! He's definitely intrigued by her isn't he?!

I can't remember where I read it but isn't Eric supposed to have a relationship with one of the male characters in the show at some point Sounds exciting! Didn't you say something about Lafayette? So maybe it's him! Ooooh can't wait to find out!!! :D

Can't believe Lafayette was a minor character either! I love him! Him and Jason in the first season were just the funniest! A great comedic side to accompany the romance and 'horror' sides. I miss that already - there doesn't seem to be as much comedy this time without those two! Still love it though!

Great photo of Bill and Eric! Very menacing! Eric definitely suits his shorter hair!

LOVE the Sookie and Bill photo too! Was that after that horrid coven were trying to intimidate her?

skibopple, yes, that was after the first scene in "Mine", when Bill picked her up from lying on the coffee table. You could hear a pin drop because all the idyllic romance of the second episode had just been shattered by the "Monroe Vamps".

musing, did you ever see the 4th episode when the audience first met Eric? His 'long' hair looked really nice (and very 'Thor'-like, a part the actor almost got), but his long hair in the rest of the season looked more like a greasy mechanic's 'do. Not sure why the artistic choice about that. His hair in "Escape from Dragon House", ie 4th episode, was not only nice, and he was well dressed, too. That's okay, the Eric fans act like they're about to spontaneously combust at any moment (or at least part of them are :haha:), so I guess they had to grunge Eric up to save the actor from getting mauled in public.

Yes, the rumor's out there Eric's going to have a possible sexual relationship with Lafayette, so far I haven't read any upset female fans.
The show's publicist put out there that vampires are 'pansexual', which I guess means, if it moves, it's game! :haha:

This next arc should be fun. I've been hearing about the Dallas adventure since the beginning of the show, although I remind myself it's 50% book and 50% surprises by Alan Ball and writer staff.

I've just recently had a bit of time on my hands so I've been rewatching the first series - not got far into it but you're so right, the second episode really is awesome! After Sookie is beaten up by the Ratrays and Bill saves her! Awwwww! I love it love it love it!!!

Wow that would be interesting! Yeah those TB vamps don't seem to be picky at all do they when it comes to sex?! Or food for that matter! Apart from Eric of course judging from the first Fangtasia scene! So maybe Lafayette meets his standards! ;)

Yeah I read somewhere that most of the rest of this season is Sookie and Bill (and Jessica) in Dallas and only at the end do the come back to Bon Temps to see what havoc Marianne has wreaked on the town. So Dallas is still going to be a pivotal storyline despite the changes from the book! Eeek can't wait!!! :D

Yeah, the funny part is the Eric fans don't seem bothered from what I've read. What can I say, they're a nutty bunch! :P It would Greatly relieve the Bill/Sookie fans to hear Eric takes up with Lafayette instead of Sookie. I've been told in the books Eric and Sookie become a couple through several adventures. Bill is coerced by Eric into confessing to Sookie he was sent to seduce her into aiding the vampire community by reading minds. Sookie is so furious she banishes Bill from her sight. One Eric/Sookie fan on a TB fansite said I needed to get used to because Eric/Sookie was definitely going to happen! Look who's laughing now! :P :haha:

The first two episodes from the first season are the oldest TIVO'd recordings I have on my DVR. The 'courtship walk' covered a lot of ground in their relationship, it's beautifully written. I've watched it many times.

Yes, I've heard a lot about this next phase of this adventure, but I don't know what will be taken from the book and what Alan Ball and writing staff will change. At any rate, other than watching the Tour de France, it's the only (new) thing on tv! Glad to have a TB buddy to enjoy it with!

Ok I know this is a teensy bit spoilery but I read this review of sunday's episode and it basically implies that this is where the fun begins (Eeeek can't wait!). I just thought this was a great review of the series in general and wanted to share!

It's a review in USA today (which I got from ******************) which doesn't really have any major spoilers, just a few plot hints and info about last season (for those who haven't watched it yet) but I thought I'd warn you anyway just in case:

"Not that the first three episodes haven't been great, gory, sexy fantasy fun, or that it hasn't been a pleasure to see new characters arrive and new stories begin. But with Sunday's episode, the first this season written by creator Alan Ball, you can just feel the show's main plots kick into another gear.

That is, by the way, par for the True Blood course: It was around this same time last go-round that Gran died, the event that jump-started the first season. Nothing quite that series-shaking happens Sunday, but major answers do arrive, including some important new information about that heart-coveting monster, as major shifts send the characters off and running in new directions.

For Sookie and her beloved blood-sucker, Bill (the perfectly teamed Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer), that means a trip to Dallas to hunt for a kidnapped vampire sheriff, with Bill's vamp ward Jessica (an amusingly petulant Deborah Ann Woll) in tow. No, the show hasn't left the backwoods of Bon Temps. But by taking a big-city sojourn, True Blood can explore a whole new humorous side of its out, loud and proud vampire metaphor, complete with luxury vampire hotels that play vampire porn. (Sample title: Intercourse With a Vampire.)

Happily, the new plot continues to stoke the fire Paquin and Moyer bring to their hot, star-crossed romance while adding a new layer of domestic comedy. Somewhat reluctantly, they're now raising a teenager — and underneath the vamp-vs.-human overlay is a smart exploration of the accommodations two very different people have to come to when parenting.

Other stories perk along, including one that reunites two terrific actors and characters: Alexander Skarsgard's Eric and Nelsan Ellis' Lafayette. Indeed, sparing Lafayette the deadly fate he met in Charlaine Harris' first book was one of the biggest and smartest departures the show has made.

The only story line stumble so far is Jason's (Ryan Kwanten) stint with an anti-vampire cult. It has been entertaining, but too much of the humor plays as an overly familiar attack on fundamentalists. If the plot (like the show itself) hasn't already shot over the top, it's skimming right along the border, and the writers would be wise to resist the urge to soar higher.

That qualm aside, what we're seeing this season is a show that has grown confident and comfortable enough to expand its universe while maintaining its tonal control. Almost every comic scene includes the threat of horror, and almost every horrific scene has some small touch of comic relief.

All in all, True Blood is one of TV's true joys. Drink deep."

Is it sunday yet? :D:D:D:D:D

Holy cow, skibopple, Outstanding Post! Thanks for the article.

Even at the Golden Globes last year, Stephen Moyer was talking to Joey Fatone, and he had quite a twinkle in his eye when he said, "You won't believe what we have planned this year!"

Fine observation about Gran kickstarting the show, that propelled her into Bill's arms. And another good argument for Not following spoilers. I'd been prepared for Gran's death but misunderstood that she died a natural death, I was definitely Not prepared to find her covered in blood with her face set in shock.

Eric's supposed to open up this year, although I think they've made too much about a possible love affair with Lafayette. (everybody else, TB's vampires are pansexual and Lafayette's gay) I love Alexander Skarsgard, and I want to see him in a bigger role, say as opposed to Ryan Kwatan's subplot (no offense intended, Jason).

As long as they don't incorporate the Eric/Sookie romance, I'm happy. :D That's not to say I'll have a heart attack if they follow the (rumored) book plotlines, I just prefer Bill and Sookie. Division over this has been surprising on another TB website I occasionally visit, but, oh well, we'll see!

Everyone who's either more in the know than I am or whose read the book says there should be some real fireworks coming up. I was just musing if we met The King and Queen of Texas in the previews *rubbing hands together*. I can't wait!

Cathy I have a confession to make! :ashamed0001: I've not been on the boards all week cos I've been reading the books which was a really bad idea as I'm supposed to be writing my thesis but ARGGGHHH I couldn't put it down! Dagnamit! And....well....I think I maybe going over to the dark side :ashamed0001: I think I'm turning into a bit of an Eric fan too! :ashamed0001:

I have to be clear on this though, I still love TV Bill bless him but it terms of the books, at the moment I've gotta say I'm falling more on the Viking's side! I can TOTALLY see where the Viking Whorde are coming from but the TV show is pretty different so I'm definitely wondering how this one is going to go! EEEK CAN'T WAIT! :D
