Okay I've been watching some tape on this...
And apart from it being different streets (not surprising since they are no longer filming in NYC)

Anywho...

In S1 one the almost crash -you definitely hear the crash and airbag deploying even though Olivia avoids the crash.

The two cars in the accident are the same and hit on the same sides as they would have if hit in S1.

Olivia's car is hit/almost hit from the same side

In S2, her car has done a 180 and is facing the opposite direction of the flow of traffic -but the orientation of the cars doesn't really make sense that way. The only way the orientation of the cars makes sense is if HIS car spins 180, which means Olivia's car was travelling in the wrong direction (Or perhaps I'm over-thinking this one)

Now the main problem with the theory that Olivia switched dimensions at the time of the crash is if she realized the WTC was there. They made a point of showing the NYC skyline as she was driving in and there were no towers. The Hotel name is largely uninteligible (Mitsumi?/) and doesn't appear to exist but it is on Broadway -which means nothing since Broadway spans the entire island of Manhattan. It is interesting to note that you could Broadway is just one block away from the WTC, so a building with a Broadway address could easily have been connected over a very short walk.

I know the elevator could be some sort of device that moves you horizontally and vertically, but that just seems too much to me. The elevator she was on only went up to floor 26 or something, so clearly she did NOT enter the WTC elevators in a straightforward way.

Hmmmm....

I too have been rewatching the accident sequence from the finale and the season opener. In the finale, the silver car appears on Olivia's passenger side. She swerves to the left to avoid it but we do hear a crash. In the season opener the silver car is on the driver's side and the impact seems strange to me too. The difference in camera angle and street settings adds to the confusion.

Resumes head scratching.

Perhaps it has something to do with Olivia's "ability" do to cortexiphan. Maybe it caused some sort of personal "time bubble" or something. Maybe when the crash occurred she went into alternate reality mode for an instant to avoid the crash, then changed back into the correct reality, then switched to the alternate reality again in the elevator. I'm admittedly grasping at straws here, but it makes some sense in a Fringe sort of way. Thoughts?

*sigh* Just thinking about it makes my head hurt.

Hopefully they'll explain this, because I can't make heads or tails of it.

In one reality there was a crash, in the other there wasn't. But she was in the reality that the crash occurred during the crash (or was she?). But she goes through realities twice in the elevator, that much is clear. But then she goes flying through the windshield?

I can't wait for all of this to get slowly explained throughout season two because we all know it will.

I think the small differences we notice between the finale crash and the season opener crash are because of the filming location change.

As soon as she swerved we heard a crash sound. That is the exact time she went to the alternate reality. That's my 2 cents. The blue flash in the elevator was either to throw us off or the elevator is a little more than what we think an elevator is.

she had to have stayed in the alternate reality since the crash IMO, especially because when she called Nina she was "out of the country", the same thing that Nina said when Bell was in the alterverse. Now I remember seeing somewhere that they decided to keep only 2 realities and indicate that the alter reality will only occur in the same space and same time. The blue flash of course meant something.. I think she switched realities a few times in the elevator... maybe back to the "normal" reality (when all the people appeared) and then back again, but there was something strange about where she ended up... again the blue flash indicating some sort of transportation. Possibly the doors in the alter reality that the woman led Liv through were transportation portals?? just a thought.
