why peter left when he was young

I think it was in the first one, Peter left when his dad went to St Claire, he left the MIT and the country...I'm not sure but that's what I remember.

I don't think Peter had a good childhood living with the two people who were constantly reminded of what they'd done (and their dead child) every time they looked at him. Probably why he left.

And... it's confusing when he left because:

Walter left Peter to Elizabeth. And Peter claimed that they were close. Peter even at one point say something about moving to Alliston. So why leave your mom alone? Why go to Iraq? I don't really see that he went away because of "crazy Walter in St Claires", which seems to be the main reason.

I think a general reason for Peter's leavings it's because of his character.

He likes freedom and doesn't want to feel supressed.

He is like an albatross and wants to fly forever free....

I think that after the alter Peter was brought back, Walter probably changed because of the guilt and got more involved in work and less involved with Peter, and there was probably fighting amongst him and Elizabeth. Peter once said that he felt before as if Walter going crazy "was something he did TO us"

As for why he left ultimately, I think even though Peter didn't remember anything specifically, he probably always had a feeling deep inside that he didn't fit in or didn't belong, and that made it hard to stay in one place for too long.

The bio on the Fox sight also says that Peter set out to become as different from his father as possible. So instead of obsessively focused on one thing, his work, Peter took up a life of wondering and trying different things.

so after all, fringe still hvn't tell us the whole story of WHY peter left...
we just know he was left, but dunno why and when

I think we may learn about this in Season 3.

After all, he returned to the "other side" and came back. He could have stayed where he was. But he really does love Olivia... and I think he made his choice about which Walter meant the most to him. Remember... Walter took a huge gamble in trying to get him. I don't know if he knows the whole story... how Walter intended to cure him and go back alone. The only reason why he took Peter back with him was because the serum bottle broke--he had no cure to give him.

And so, I suspect we'll get a deeper look into their relationship and perhaps explore Peter as a young man, when he left to go off on his own. Both people have plenty of guilt to bear. Peter didn't make an effort to visit his father in the institution. And Walter... well, he experimented on his own son!
