To be honest, as much as I hated the animation concept in this episode. Had they done it the way you mention it would have at least made more sense. They could chalk it up to just a part of the hallucinations from the trip rather then having no reason for it what so ever.
the animation was a great way for the characters to differentiate when they are inside the mind and when they are in real life. Like a marker. I voted 10/10 because i couldnt vote 15/10. I feel like the people that didnt like the episode are afraid to stray away from the well established and "easier" to follow episodes, dont expect to be held by your hand through the whole series. Open your mind people! I think this is the message of this episode
I would've preferred it if it had been animated the entire time they were in Olivia's mind as well.
For some reason when it got to the animated portion, I thought this episode was gonna be like that "Family Guy" where Stewie and Brian traveled to alternate universes where in every universe they visited, the style of the animated changed. And I thought with every new scene or place they visited the style of the environment/episode would change. That would've made it better IMO instead letting the animated portions overstay their welcome.
But I took it for what it was cuz clearly Fringe isn't so hot in the ratings or profit and good ol' CGI is a money saver for any form of media.![]()

There was quite a bit to like about this episode from "Astro.... Wally!" to the the characters coming to terms with various aspects of their lives. One of which that really struck me was Broyles. Under the effects of LSD saying death stalked him; that he saw death and it was he. Bell telling Walter that they needed each other in their youth when they had power; but that now Walter had the wisdom of humility, that his decisions would be just. Olivia now knowing she can be strong and deal with her fears.
I wondered if it might be foreshadowing of his own death. Afterall... a producer has said that a fan favorite would die before the season ended. Broyles death might 'even' things out between the universes - or it may be that the blu!verse Broyles would offer his life in protection of both universes in the same way his red!verse counterpart did.
But in a simpler respect it was the inner turmoil showing through of a man whose inner self and feelings we normally do not see. That is what I most liked about the scene.
