I think Olivia's role is to reinforce Peter's emotional state and determination. She's not necessary to his being able to operate the machine, but will help him succeed. The line she says in the teaser, about not being able to achieve what we want, could endanger this.

I don't consider that him "activating" the power source. It definitely responded to him though. And yes he was "alone" in the apartment but little did he know Olivia pretending to be Altlivia was standing literally on the other side of his door. So yeah, he was technically alone but Olivia was in close proximity to him. He had been touching those parts for hours while studying them, it wasnt until Olivia was also in the same building that they really responded to HIM.

Interesting idea... Do you think if he was with Feauxlivia the machine would work?
Whichever Olivia he chooses... her universe will survive.
He still has feelings for her.

Yes, interesting theory, AlainaO. And to that I'm thinking that the stripped Henry DNA isn't totally stripped, and the machine will recognize a combination of Peter and Olivia, or Olivia added to the stripped Henry DNA.

So perhaps Feauxlivia triggers the other side's machine... Does that make sense?

Or they used the stripped DNA from Henry to create a golum, a new shape-shifter. whose orders from Walternate would be to start the Red!verse Machine.

I like that idea! And that would be why Olivia was rooting around in Bell's lab looking for the decoder

true , but that was when he finally decided to touch that piece at the very moment when he realized something was wrong , but if you recall before that , and when Olivia was in the car with alt-Charlie, those little things moved when he let his hand slid over them .
but I still don't mind this theory ,well at least it would make sense .

otherwise , I would suggest that maybe he wasn't supposed to power the machine over here , I mean he belongs to the red verse after all .
the last time he tried to make contact with the over here machine it responded less agressive but yet it caused his nose to bleed. so maybe "the conciousness" of the blueverse machine is perhaps considering Him as a stranger , an enemy , so to speak, thus he should be rejected . what do you think ?

IMO Olivia is special down to the level of her specific DNA, which makes her fundamentally different from Fauxlivia, much more so than any of the other alternates. It is because of this experimentation on Olivia as a child that makes her special, gives her abilities, and for some reason makes her and Peter tuned in to each other. I feel that they are connected on a much deeper level than Peter/Fauxlivia, a connection that started during childhood, when emotions and hormones are heightened. Before life has really diminished their "potential" completely, on top of it being a very tumultuous time in both of their lives. Remember what Bell said to Olivia in Momentum Deferred: "You will need Peter by your side."

I think Walter putting that goo on his hands is what caused Peter to get tossed back to the floor. I think the Observers had been steering things to get Peter in that machine on this side, including getting Walter to the point where he would sacrifice him. They succeeded but they didn't know that Walter would put that goo on him to protect him. I think that gesture just threw a big ol' wrench in to the works.
