Perhaps people are overthinking it?
In the last episode before the break we see that Peter is going to try and leave the amberverse. I think the Lee storyline is showing both us and Peter that Olivia can have a life without Peter. After all, we wouldn't want Olivia to end up as some strange old cat lady in the amberverse, would we?
I wasn't saying that Lincoln should replace Peter's role in the show, merely saying that maybe Peter and Olivia aren't meant to get together at the
show's end. There is such a thing as a tragic romance (Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Iseult) and maybe the romance between Peter and Olivia
isn't meant to have a happy ending. But as long as it's well written, that's fine with me.
Honestly, I don't like this Lincoln/Olivia thing at all, even if this is not his Olivia.
What I mean is, even if the observer had saved Peter in this timeline in 1985, she wouldn't be the same he used to know, because, as Joel Wyman said, this is a different timeline. Another one, not the same one changed because of Peter's nonexistence. That's why he's giving up on this one, Peter's not stupid.
But still I don't think it's something 'pleasant' to see since this is the only Olivia Dunham we're getting for now (his or not) and most of us are used to seeing Olivia Dunham with Peter, forget about them as a couple cause I know many of you don't like the idea, but as friends! They were always extremely close for two apparent strangers, you know like brother and sister or good friends.
But anyway, it's not just what was shown, I mean after all that was just nothing, just two co-workers having coffee, the most normal thing if you will. Now what really really bugs me is what's going on on Tumblr. Maybe I should stay away for a while. People are posting season 1 screencaps of Peter and Olivia and replacing Peter's head so that it looks like Lincoln and Olivia. Such a stupid and irritating little thing; it amazes me how easily they forget about one of the main characters and his history with another main character.
I don't know. Don't get me wrong. It's OK that they like Lincoln and accept him, ultimately that's good for the show, but this obsession or this wishing-he'd-been-here-all-along is something I don't get, really.
Peter is the most important character right now. You can't just forget about him, and I'm not saying it because I love Peter and Josh blah blah blah (I do but I'm being objective now). What I mean is: try and have Lincoln step on the machine, see what happens...

What if you and I, both of us, at this very moment were being manipulated?
Huh, if Peter and Olivia are not meant to be, then why is Peter back? Just to watch Lincoln and Olivia be all lovey dovey and Lincoln replacing him as her partner and love interest?
They are meant to be. But this is not her, It's like Fauxlivia, but instead of being from a parallel universe this one's from a parallel timeline. So in theory it's not her.
I still think it's just unnecessary to do this Linc/Olivia especially cause once Peter's back 'home' we will just leave all of this behind.
I don't think we'll have people from different universes and different timelines coexisting and working together all at once. Alternates is fine, but three versions of Olivia and Lincoln and Walter would be too much.
It was always clear (at least since 'And those we've left behind') that this Olivia was never gonna end up with Peter, it's almost implied that she'll be happy with someone else. I don't know if it's cool to develop that on screen tho... It's...unnecessary. We know she's not his. She will be someone else's.
IMO there're more important things right now, I would have loved to learn more about the machine or see what Peter was working on maybe instead of focusing so much on a story that'll lead apparently nowhere...
