Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ONLY time he has worn both the hat and the sunglasses combined was when he was looking at the Beacon, no?

But is he really wearing his sunglasses in the pilot? I can't tell. My eyes aren't all that good ....

The Observer is housing part of William Bells' conciousness, as is other Observers. Together, they corporately form a complete William Bell.

It took me a second viewing but I found the observer tonight...what I missed on both viewings was both the ep #9 clue AND the fact that the red/green flashes were tied to his binoculars. Grr! I want to go back and rewatch all the eps now to see if any appears to lose focus for a second when there's a flash of red/green light? (I can't, because I didn't have enough space on my DVR to house all of this season!) Did anyone catch this, or am I diving off into bizarro-spec land again?
