Default How can the machine have activated in both universes if Peter never existed?

I don't know if this was discussed in the other episode's forum sections but I don't understand how there is a bridge between the two universes created by the machines when the only person who could activate the machines never existed. Help anyone?

That was my question to my wife - and she pointed out that these machines in this timeline are different looking, so probably were activated by some other means. Her theory is Walter and/or Walternate did it to attack/exploit the other universe.

The machine wasn't linked to Peter in this "timeline", not sure why. Remember a few episodes back though him and Walter were trying to make it so the machine would respond to him so he could use it to get "home".

In the original timeline it was future Walter who built the machine to send it back through the wormhole, after Peter convinced him to do so. Once Peter was erased, he paradoxically was unable to enter the machine and travel to the future to inspire Walter to build the machine for him to use.

How and why the machine was built in this "timeline" is a mystery that I hope we will learn more about, but we at least know that without Peter existing it would have been impossible to build the device to match his genetic profile.

Omniscient_Jay can help you with this. I had a similar question and he cleared it up.
