    Default The Hunger Games

Did I miss another thread's that's already started on "The Hunger Games"?

I saw it this afternoon. They were very faithful to key moments of the book. Differences from the book were few, didn't detract, and I like a decision they made about the last battle of the Hunger Games, differing from the book.

When I picked up the book, I laughed to read glowing accolades from Stephen King AND JK Rowling on the back jacket! How could it be this good? The use of present tense is brilliantly done in the book.

You can read it in a day. I tried to be as quiet a possible in a couple of tearful scenes.

Woody Harrelson is great in the movie. Donald Sutherland is formidable with a velvet demeanor. Stanley Tucci allows for some humor while his affectations are deservedly unlikeable. Josh Hutchins and Liam Hemsworth both provide a solid foundation for Jennifer Lawrence. She's got her work cut out for her now in the two upcoming sequels.

Katniss and life at the Hob is colorful in the book. Gray and dank at first, at least District 12 has saved some civility where more people elsewhere starve to death behind closed doors.

I thought "The Hunger Games" was great as well. I especially liked how they made Katniss' hometown
look like it came out of the Great Depression, and how Katniss was able to outwit the Games by having her and her boyfriend threaten to eat the poison simultaneously.

Yes, Hamish's strategy was brilliant, and subversive. I haven't read the second book!

The victory of two, and a "united couple", whether that ends up being true, negates the punitive nature of "there can be only one", "Survivor-style" Betrayal-based games. Up till now everyone's just accepted the slaughter, glamorized it even.

But Sedition's on the menu now in the future of District 12!

Has anyone felt like the whole "He's my boyfriend thing between Katniss and What's his name" was FAKE?
I mean he loves her.. it's quite obvious.. but i don't actually feel like Katniss truely returns the feelings. I mean she loves him in the fact that they were it this together.. but i don't see how she actually LOVEs him in the way he loves her. It just felt... played up.
I haven't read the books only saw that movie.
To understand what happened at the diner, we use Mr. Papaya.

Oh, reading the book will help you know some of her inner thoughts. Having been on the brink of starvation, Katniss' grows up with more of a survivalist sensibility than wondering who she wants to kiss.

She goes along with Hamish and Peeta's strategy. It's only when she finds out two people from the same district can win, some kind of attraction starts. But Gale is still in her mind, and he's been her hunting companion a lot longer than she's known Peeta. At the end of the book, she doesn't know how she feels, Peeta takes that as a rejection, and he takes her hand to greet the crowds meeting the train from the Capitol as a performance, with sadness. Peeta still loves her, but Katniss doesn't know how she feels.

I welcome any opinions, especially when they've read and know more than me. I love being spoiled a little bit, although who Would give up Katniss without a fight? *smile*

I got the full set today of 3 books. The second book wasn't available anywhere at Half Price Books. The fellow who sold the set said they only had the "British English version". He said the American version wasn't out yet. Hmmm, less violence, more tea? I can't see it being much different, the basic premise is too violent to gloss over.

Once, on another forum which had members from the States, the UK, and Australia, I spent a weekend waiting for a hurricane to hit the coast, watching people drive into the area and congenially crowd into coffee houses. Anyway, we were in a hotel, and online we all started talking about common words in "our" English that wasn't used on the other two continents. It turned out to be very entertaining and took a lot of worry about the hurricane away. Thank goodness for good friends online!

So, I hope those of you who like this book/movie series can get the 2nd & 3rd book, too.
