Well did you ever consider that maybe the writers deliberately set you up to think that so that in S5, they could then surprise you, when it turned out that September's "they" actually refers to something else entirely, and the Observer invasion never happens?

I, for one, am holding out hope for this eventuality, because it would mean that the madness of 4.19 would remain confined to that one crazy, nonsensical outing. If S5 really is about the Observer war, I'm not even sure I want to watch.

Then again, maybe you guys have all read more spoilers than I have (which is none), in which case you can poke fun at me as well, for not knowing.
That might have worked if 4.19 wasn't open-ended, but it was.

And they basically spell what's going to happen. The biggest thing is that September tried to warn the Fringe team, but "something unexpected" happened to him (as Walter relates in 4.19). If an Observer failed to make changes in the timeline, a being who works from the outside in, then that 2036 future is inevitable unless the 2036ers do something to change their past or their present, at which point we'd be re-visiting the 4.19 setting anyway to see how they did it.

There's also all the showrunner talk about how 4.19 was the unofficial "backdoor" S5 pitch and all the articles and interviews relating how 4.19 is an important part of what S5 will consist of.

All of this to say that there is great reason to suspect that the end scene of 4.22 is but one link in a causal chain that results in the events of 4.19.

"If S5 really is about the Observer war, I'm not even sure I want to watch."

lol, um yeah a 13 episodes arc as a prequel to 4.19 sounds horrible as opposed to 13 awesome episodes complete with "human shapeshifters" and "porcupine gargoyles" and other useless nonsense that serves no purpose

shoulda just ended on Peter in the machine...

no possible way to even redeem season 4 ... so best bet is to do this preinvasion story arc

They wouldn't spend 13 episodes on a prequel arc to the 4.19 episode, maybe three or four at the most hopefully. What I think they'll do is at the start of season 5, skip ahead to 2015 with Etta, spend those episodes detailing the observer invasion and their first attempt to stop them (also showing how Bell was with them too), then the rest of the episodes occuring post 4.19.

That way we'll know what happens inbetween these points (4.19) without having to see it again. The rest of the season focusing on getting rid of the observers, and resolving any outstanding questions.

They should also spend 1 episode showing the origins of the observers and how they went about forming the science team and also the 2609 invasion force. That way both arcs (that of the prequel eps, the observer ep and 4.19 will converge into the resolution phase of the season. And all throughout this answer other questions (such as the boy from Inner Child, the various amounts of WWII/Nazi Germany themes and also giving closure to the series).

I remember reading ages ago that if (this was early-ish season 4 IIRC) that both J.J Abrams and Blair Brown would like to direct episodes. If this is the case then season 5 sounds amazing.

Just what is your point exactly? As bad as much of S4 may have been, it is *always* possible for things to get worse, and I think that pursuing this "Observer invasion" concept is a surefire way to ensure that they do.

EDIT: To clarify: I'm not disputing your assertion that it would be better for them to "reboot" things by pursuing an entirely different storyline in the next season rather than try to pick up the pieces of this one. I'm just saying that this "Observer invasion" storyline is not the one that they need to start off their clean slate with. It's a terrible idea.

There is no way to assess the merits of an Observer-centric S5 without seeing it first. We were merely introduced to the concept in 4.19; it's the follow-through that matters.

So I would think, at least.

If I may ask, what elements of the Invasion storyline would ensure things get worse, to use your words?

The thing is, we've already seen what the premise is. Anything that happens in S5 has to follow from this basic premise, and it is fundamentally inconsistent with what has previously been established about the Observers on the show. I've already explained how I felt here:

I don't understand how anyone could think that this invasion storyline is a good idea. It's absurd.

How is it inconsistant with the Observers that we've seen?

We've seen so little about them, that its hard to tell what anyone outside of the science team are like. We know nothing about their world or why they needed "proper" events to happen. We've seen them foreshadowed in villainy in both 2.03 (i think this is the episode with the crazy general, anyways) and in 2.19. There are a ton of Observer-centric questions left to answer (more beacon stuff, how Bell knows Observer tech, Mosley, etc). I think this could be the best season yet.

I have read the post in the link.

It seems the central reservation is that the portrayal of Observerkind in 4.19 is different that the portrayal of Observerkind in prior episodes, arguably (and probably) radically so. There exists a disconnect, as there is nothing linking how a September-brand Observer can become a Windmark-brand Observer. What caused them to diverge so? What is the narrative justification for such a departure?

My response to this is once again follow-through. Without answers yet (naturally), there's an equal chance that the justification will be sensible and logical, that the justification will be poor and contrived, or that there will be no justification at all.

For this reason, I cannot yet condemn the Invasion premise. And yet, I am eager to explore the Invasion storyline, precisely because I wonder how they will justify this departure.

And as a side note, the Monthly Crew is a science expedition merely sent out to watch things; would it be wise to use their behaviour - ones whose job it is to be detached and impartial - as a template for all Observerkind? Though who knows; perhaps in their downtime, December and his posse like to hit the strip clubs.

I see December as being a "ball-gag" kinda guy myself.

August would probably spend considerable free time on E-Harmony lol ...
