Ok, I'll have to post more composed opinions a lil later, but I will say that i was VERY impressed with the episode. It opened well and still suprised me, even though I thought it wouldn't reallt draw me in that quickly. It wasn't quite up there with the opening scene in LOST's pilot, but then I watched Lost completely unsuspecting, whereas I had ALOT of expectation for Fringe..so it was a very good opening, and the special effects blew me away. $10mil?..no kidding!! The special effects/CGI etc in this episode are some of the best i've seen on TV.
The Olivia/John relationship thing was a bit wooden, but it got better with alot of subterfuge..and the chemistry between Peter and Olivia was good. It certainly became more palatable once I saw the ending and what happens between Olivia and John.
John Noble as Walter is amazing. It must be a really tough, yet fun role to play, and he was totally convinving - funny, mad, zaney, brilliant, compassionate, passionate..he's my favourite character so far.
I also loved the relationship between him and Peter..alot better than i thought it would be. I should also add that Peter, played by Joshua Jackson was miles better than i feared he would be. After watching the sneak peaks and trailers, I was worried that he was badly miscast..not on your life..JJ knows his stuff and the other 'JJ' was very good..perhaps a bit too aware of himself, but still, very good.
Lance Reddick is the man..what else is there to say? The man has so much weight and screen presence..getting him onboard was a master-stoke. I do hope it doesn't conflict with his work on LOST, but this man is one heck of an actor. I also love his relationship with Olivia..spikey and antagonistic..but in the end of this episodee roles change slightly, and I like the fact that he's eager to get Olivia in the 'loop', as they say.
Overall, the episode really zipped along, although it laboured in places, and perhaps could have done with more pacing in spots..however i'm being picky, and as a Lost fan i'm used to both quick and slow burning episodes (just not all in the same episode). But I love the tone of this show..even the opening credits blew me away.
I'm not saying it's the best thing i've ever seen on TV..but seriously..this show as immense potential and it can go places where I want TV to go. It's certainly one of the best things i've seen on TV in along while (barring the always brilliant episodes of Lost)..it wasn't perfect, but if this is just the fringe of things to come..well, i'm glad I signed up!
