    Smile "He's not dead"???

In Pilot, most of us know that when Olivia was inside John's consciousness, there was a gravestone in the background. On the gravestone were the words "HE'S NOT DEAD" inscribed. We all "knew" that was referring to John Scott ... but was it?

Do you think John Scott is still alive (Nina Sharp did assure Olivia in 1.13 that he is not alive, but why can't she be lying)? Do you think that the gravestone was referring to someone one else entirely--maybe someone that has to do with the kayak? Her uncle? Zeno? Or do you think the writers put that it there just to fuel our curiousity, because at the time we saw these words, John Scott was not yet dead.

    Thoughts and opinions?

I don't think he is dead in terms of not having a heartbeat or breathing but I don't think he is alive either. I am going to go with Nina for once (maybe a bad decision) and believe that he is just being kept alive to try and obtain his former memories/information.

That's interesting, Rocky.... If John Scott is indeed alive, then MD would have had to bring him back to life, considering that in Pilot the MD employee says he has been dead for 5 hours... unless they made a mistake and he was never dead, which I would believe would be rare for such an elaborate and advanced company.

Well I think it is important to remember (as I think Walter might have said) dead is relative term...

"He's Not Dead" also appears when Olivia is in the tank in Dreamscape - check thread

I wonder if it shows up her 3rd and 4th times in the tank. I'll have to re-watch.

Although John Scott was "definitely dead" he still made quite a few appearances for a dead guy. Although he is dead, he has been able to directly communicate with Olivia. When she "hallucinated" when he e-mailed her, and finally in 1.13 when they talked in his memories. Although he was dead, he surely was not yet gone.

I agree with Rocky --> I thought he was being kept alive so that the information on the disc did not start to dissinigrate. I also agree with Matthew that we have sure seen a lot of him for a dead guy. I do believe this last episode was a sort of goodbye to him, though. Walter told Olivia her brain waves were returning to her own pattern, we learn not to hate Agent Scott because he was on a black ops mission so he wasn't a traitor afterall, and we learn that he really did love Olivia and had intended to marry her. I think now all that internal conflict Olivia was having with John is now over and he is really dead and she can move on with her life.

So because Massive Dynamic was keeping him "alive," to a certain degree, that is how Olivia still managed to communicate with him whilst in the Tank?

No. Massive Dynamic was keeping John Scott alive so that the disc in his palm (that physically stored his memories, correct me if I'm wrong) didn't dissolve.

Olivia kept in contact with John because the synaptic transfer (one mind meets the other to get info) basically sent John's memories into Olivia, and the "files" from John hadn't been separated from Olivia's.

As to how they actually communicated whilst in the memories, I have no idea. If I remember correctly, Walter told Olivia that she couldn't possibly be talking to John when she was in the memories, because it was JUST a memory. John's consciousness "wasn't" supposed to be able to respond to her.

Which makes me wonder if Walter was wrong, how come Nina can't be wrong too? Unless of course Olivia's mind made up its own scene between the two and John actually was the traitor...
