Yeah he did seem to be really trying to hurt her. Then again it also seemed that Loeb was really trying to hurt her as well, but if we can trust him (which I am not sure) he was trying to help. So it could all be a part of the you never know who to trust aspect of the show. I think John has told Olivia the truth, and I think his part is done and over with now.
