I have to admit, I never was sure of the blue lights, but now we know it really means something..but what exactly?
The blue lights have appeared in many of the Fringe episodes this season. Some fans think they're meaningless, whilst others are positive that they hold relevance.
Have you noticed any in this episode? Feel free to share your sightings in this handy central 'blue light' thread for "There's More Than One Of Everything".![]()

I have to go back to my original thoery that it seems to mean there is some "communication" or "connection" between the two universes taking place there. Like maybe....someone from the other universe trying to do what Jones was doing from this side? Taking a look at our side of things?
I wasn't sure either, but now I have to go back and rewatch every bloody episode!
I'm a fan of the theory that it relates to Blue Shift. As light moves away from us, we see its color shifted toward the blue end of the UV spectrum due to the relativistic Doppler Effect. The blue light is a sign of some kind of transportation-- probably between realities-- in that we see the light around the person shifting away to blue. The interesting thing in this is that when the scientist dies in the syphilis episode, we can take comfort in the fact that the blue light hints that his soul has simply moved on to a different reality...
Given how the show likes to dress up its craziness with stuff that's actually scientifically fit, I think this makes a lot of sense. Not to mention that if people get curious, the best book to read on the subject is A Brief History of Time, by Stephen Hawking, which is not only an amazing primer on physics and astronomy, but also incredibly accessible to the layperson.
I thought it was cute that in the elevator, the building has no 13th floor (which isn't uncommon in Europe, but you don't see it a lot in the states). There's a nice feeling that when she went through that zone of nonexistence, it was easy for her to cross between the worlds using whatever sort of fringe technology MD has. It also brings back echoes of a Babylon 5 episode that was written by the amazing Neil Gaiman, called Grey 17 Is Missing, where an entire deck of the station has been abandoned and taken over by Minbari cultists and some kind of crazy monster. Who knows what lurks on the missing floors of hotels?![]()
The thing is, the Star Trek movie had these same blue lights. I really don't think they mean anything.![]()
