In Nina's conversation with Olivia, she starts hinting at her past....


NINA: "I've lost people close to me. I know how hard that can be. Not to mention the rumor about what he was involved with. And of course the joy of being a female in a traditionally male line of work. I mean, no doubt, some of your colleagues are assuming you were ... intimate."


Now at first, I thought she was referring to Agent Scott, as Nina had been to one to bring him up... but in relating Olivia's situation to her own... perhaps Nina was referring to a man from her past, a man she was close to, one who was involved in classified work... and that perhaps people had assumed that Nina and the unnamed man were intimate. And she had lost that man to something.

Who could the man from her past be? Perhaps a doctor who was involved in fringe science, and who was sent to an institution for the better part of 2 decades?

I assumed that she was being twisty in that she knew from 'reanimating' and questioning Agent Scott (implied at the end of the first eppy), that he and Olivia were intimate - so I thought she was kinda using words to play with Oliva's emotions..building her up as a flawless professional fellow woman, only to undercut that notion with knowledge that she (Nina) shouldn't really have (but of course does).

That said, I think you're right..there's bound to be more to Nina's comments in this scene, and it will be interesting to see whether she had/has anyone special in her life - Dr. Bell perhaps? Nina's a funny one though - she seems so jovial..yet underneath it all I sense a woman with an iron first (so to speak)

I'll need to think about this some more, once the episode has settled in my cerebrum.

Incidentally, I found it interesting to discover that Nina has psychological fears..even with her own Massive Dynamic technology. She said that her 'hand' (the non-robotic one) still gets sweaty whenever she flies. We know from the easteregg in the first episode that MD make airplanes (or at least the parts to them), yet Nina still worries that something bad might happen whilst flying.

I find this interesting because it gives us a subtle yet useful insight into her character make-up, and the potential statement from the creators on technology? As Nina herself said: It's an irrational fear - "despite the obvious intellectual understanding of their safety"..she still gets scared on take-ff. A corporate giant who doesn't have 100% faith in her own scientific technologies..

MD may control the world..but they haven't yet managed to fully control the human condition..yet.

Nina is such a complex and interesting character... I love her!

You're right though D-Roc, you definitely don't want to get on her bad side, she's too freakin' powerful and Lord only knows what could happen to you.
