It seems like there would need to be some ulterior motive though. Someone could not just make a living observing the pattern on his own. He would definitely need to work for someone else or work with someone else.

Oh, I am certain that he has a day job!
He is probably someone who works for the government in some capacity. Probably in the area of one of the intelligence agencies where he specializes in black-ops and clandestine operations.

Or maybe he just got stuck doing this sucky job as part of some sort of part time Pattern internship or initiation.

But in all seriousness, my guess is that this is what needs to be done for the time being. And as I had put in my "The Observer" post under the "The Arrival" link, I feel that he is not the only observer that we will see. I will expound on that theory later.

It might also be useful to assess whether the pattern is even a pattern to him - perhaps he understands the pattern logically, but what is illogical to him is why or how Olivia is linked to it? All speculation of course, but this man has got me wondering..

Oh I agree, he definetely has a motive.

It's been mentioned before, but at this stage, I'd compare him to a researcher. If I wanted to research something I'd study and observe it, I'd look at it from different angles and with different perspectives. I think our bald friend is collecting information..he may be from another time..or place, and so perhaps his understanding of things is different. I'm also wondering whether he's observing the pattern, Olivia..or both?

At this stage, I think his motive is to interpret. Much like how the waitress tries to interpret his writing.

I must say I learned less about CBG i this episode than I thought before I watched the episode. But there is atleast a few clues...

• He has been observing the Pattern for some years.
• He doesn't seem to age
• He knew Walter would be important many years ago, hence saving him from drowning.
• He is subject of investigation

I still belive he could be a timetraveller and I think we will have to watch out for him in future episodes as well. He will play a mayor part in the deeper story of fringe...
And there is the fact that he is in the next preview...
