Default Anime fans, what are your favorite series?

I've been an anime fan for many years, started when I was really little. I remember watching Astroboy & Voltron. I watched Sailor Moon and other popular series in the early 90s, and my interest went on from there.

My all-time favorite series are, in no certain order:

    Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors)
I liked this show because I liked the main character... He was always willing to sacrifice himself if it meant the evil baddie would be destroyed and the world saved... ^_^ I've got a thing for the tragic hero.

    B't X
I liked this one for the same reason as above. Awesome main character who had to go through a lot to save the world--and his beloved older brother. Another tragic hero in the anime OVA...even though the manga ending different. The artwork and music, especially in the OVA, is beautiful!

    Wild Knights Gulkeeva
I liked this series because...the main character again goes through much to save the world. Plus, the tragic ending helps a lot... (see the pattern here?) Also a show that has good and bad animation for every other episode...a little annoying and very aggrivating for a cel collector... Music from the show is also done by Kenji Kawaii, I believe his name is, an AWESOME composer. The artwork is directed by the same guy who did Gundam SEED (what's his name, anyone know?).

    Ys Heaven's Sanctuary OVA2
This is a short 4 episode OVA series for the 2nd Ys game, which takes place directly after the events of Ys I. The show may be short, but the animation, the music, the story... all of it is excellent, and for a fan of the game series, this was by far a favorite.

    Other favorites are:

Hakushaku to Yousei (Earl & Fairy)
This anime series was made from the novel series--which is BY FAR SUPERIOR!!! I've read all 21 books and am anxiously awaiting the next new book in the series. VERY, VERY GOOD story, and a pretty good OVA.

Yami no Matsuei (Decendants of Darkness)

I also collect animation cels. If you're currious to see my gallery and scans of everything I've collected over the years, you can find everything here: http://rekka.rubberslug.com

Other series I have a few misc. cels of are:

    Bleach
    Generator Gawl
    Nazca
    Zenki
    Shivas 123
    Ryuuki Denshou (Dragoon)
    Maze
    Bakuretsu Hunters (Sorcerer Hunters)
    ...and a couple others.

So how about you? What are your favorite series? And why?

Well, *technically* anime = animation aka cartoons... but outside of Japan "anime" has become known solely for Japanese animation. Unless you mean cartoons as in comics...?

My favorite series? I'll give a description about my top five!

    Azumanga Daioh
An extremely cute little anime about six girls going to high school, and they are each very unique. Very random, very hilarious, it's just a great one. (I actually have two episodes left, but I have finished the manga many times. I'm going to rewatch everything and then finish those two episodes )

    Axis Powers Hetalia
It's a show about countries being people! Hilarious, weird, random, and each episode is only five minutes long! How do you NOT love it?!

    Higashi no Eden
The only serious anime on my list (so far). Eden of the East has a fantastic story line and threw twists and turns at you every which way. HnE really made me think about certain things. It's a fairly short one (only 11 episodes), but is still very good.

    GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class
Possibly my favorite anime ever, this one is about four girls who go to art school! We get to see their (somewhat weird) art projects, get to see their trips to the art store, and even get to visit the art museum with them. It reminds me a lot of Azumanga Daioh. Anyway, it is HILARIOUS! And since I love art, it was actually somewhat educational, in a weird, funny sort of way.

    And my last one, K-On!
This anime is about four girls who are in the light music club at their school. Most of the time, they end up playing around instead of practicing, but in concert, they are amazing! The songs in the anime are incredibly catching, it's really funny, has some touching moments, and it's just great.

As for other ones that I like, but are not on my list (this includes some ones that haven't finished airing, so I haven't finished them yet)

    Tales of the Abyss
    Hanamaru Youchien
    Durarara!!
    Ouran High School Host Club

    Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (Super tearjerker!)

And I still have 90 series on my plan to watch list! Which includes Generator Gawl, by the way!
Banner and avatar made by eveybane!
Fringe events are popping up all over the world! And what happened to D-Roc?

Oh god, I remember seeing that! It was playing at a local anime expo (not nearly as big as a real "con") and I about DIED laughing. I can't remember what the overall plot of the show was, though.

Higashi no Eden sounds interesting to me; I tend to like the more serious/dark shows. Which reminds me, I left out a couple other series that I liked...

    Sci-Fi Harry
Story about a young kid who's very weak and always gets pushed around and develops very powerful skills of telekinesis. The style and setting of this anime was soooooo unlike anything I had ever seen before that I was really sucked into it. The opening sequence and song "Mysterious" by J'anne da Arc was the reason why I started watching it. It's a pretty dark and serious series, too. YouTube- Scifi harry (wicked song)

    Gantz
TOTAL HORROR anime... very bloody and violent, and rather sexually explicit at times... but the overall story was interesting...and I just wanted to know what happened to the characters in the end. I was reading the manga for a while, but got bored or forgot about it... Artwork is decent in the anime.

And I still have 90 series on my plan to watch list! Which includes Generator Gawl, by the way!
I liked Generator Gawl. I'm very happy to have that OP sequence winged cel with matching background in my gallery, btw. ^_^

Yeah, Azumanga Daioh is great! I remember laughing my head off when I first started watching it!

I go through phases for the anime I watch. Sometimes I'm in a silly, random phase, and that's when I watch things like Azumanga Daioh or Hanamaru Youchien. Sometimes I'm in a shoujo mood and I watch the romance stuff. And other times, I'm more in the mood for a dark, mysterious, sci-fi show. Currently, i'm in my random silly phase.

I think Gantz is on my list, but I'm not entirely sure.

haha that's great! And that's also how great anime can be; there's always something for any mood you could be in.

If it is, just be prepared... I tried to watch TEXHNOLYZE, too; it's similarly dark and violent like Gantz, but I couldn't get into the story and gave up. lol Maybe I should have watched more episodes.

My fave is Basilisk, as it is the only series I have seen in its entirety.

I've started to watch Bleach a while ago. It started strong, but my interest waned during the Bount storyline, to the point where I've stopped watching.

I've also seen some other episodes of various series here and there.

Fullmetal Alchemist looks really cool. I might consider watching that at some point.

I also looove Miyazaki's movies. (namely Princess Mononoke)

While I'm here, does anyone have any recommendations for a novice Otaku?

Hmmm, depends on what genres you like. I typically like more darker "hero" stories, but maybe you'd like to see some classic series before moving on. Here's a list of classics, some rather old to newer (2001-ish)

Tezuka Osamu (often called the father of anime)
    Black Jack
    Tetsuwan Atom (Astroboy)

    Rumiko Takahashi
    Ranma 1/2
    Inuyasha

    Akira

    Bakuretsu Hunters (Sorcerer Hunters)

    Blue Seed

    Cowboy Bebop

    Gundam Wing

    Macross

    Maze

    Record of Lodoss Wars

    Saint Seiya

    Tenchi Muyo

    Trigun

    Weiss Kreuz

    X/1999 (movie & TV seires)
