I liked this one too, I'd seen some of the casting before but I think Littlefinger was well cast and was great. I also loved the scene at the end, Syrio is going to be awesome as well I think![]()
I saw it too and I really liked it. There were some really good scenes in it and they've got a nice way of storytelling. I havn't read the books so for me the first episode hadn't to much of explaining in it. There were so many people and places I really needed the time they took with explanations.
And the producers really seem to have a thing for cliffhangers, argh!! The one for the first episode nearly killed me! I had to make sure that the actor of Bran played in the following episodes as well, I coudn't wait one week to find out.
I'm already waiting for the next episode...

I'm still watching and really enjoying it so far. I'm glad to say Peter Dinklage has grown on me, I wasn't too sure about him at first and Tyrion is one of my favourites in the books.
New GoT trailer for season 2. Looks like it's going to be good.
I wish they'd hurry up and release the season 2 DVD set so I can buy it and watch it.![]()
So, anyone following S3?
I see that I posted in this thread long ago (back when S1 was starting). In the time since, I've caught up on the book series (up to ADwD), and so I've watched S2 and S3 through the lens of a book reader (i.e. seeing how they adapt the source material).
It's pretty interesting how they're choosing to adapt the material to the screen. There's a lot of inter-book shuffling of scenes, characters original to the show embodying the roles of several book characters, and so on (and naturally, they trim out a lot of extraneous history and lore that only the books have time to explore). You can also see how budgetary factors limit the scale of battles, among other things. Even so, every aspect of the show is top notch, from the casting/acting to the cinematography to the score to the VFX to the sets and locations and more.
Naturally, the series has been epic thus far, and S3 has started out very strongly (with this past fourth episode being one of the best of the series so far). I suppose I'll mask my thoughts on recent events in Spoiler Tags, as I'll be drawing parallels to the books (I do this as a courtesy to those who haven't read the books, of course).
-There are many great characters in the sprawling cast, though my favourites (in no real order) would probably include Varys, Davos, Arya, The Hound, Tyrion, Tywin, and Daenerys (I liked Eddard and Drogo when they were around). Jaime and Brienne (individually and together) are great as well. I've also enjoyed Stannis in S2, though he hasn't had much to do in S3 so far, so I'm waiting to see how his storyline unfolds. And in S3, Lady Olenna Tyrell has been a great addition.
-As for S3's developments:
--It's pretty interesting that they're showing Theon's transformation at the hands of Ramsay Snow in real-time, seeing as in the books, Theon disappears after the burning of Winterfell and only reappears in Dance with Dragons, all the torture having happened "offscreen". It's understandable that they would do this, however; they'd need to keep Theon's presence in the story alive, as it wouldn't quite do to have Theon disappear at the end of S2, only to suddenly reappear in S5-S6.
And I say S5-S6, because if S4 covers the latter half of Storm of Swords, then S5 and beyond will cover Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons simultaneously (since they run parallel to one another). This is something I'm looking forward to seeing executed, because the show has the opportunity to strengthen the paces of either books through consolidating the material at the same time on screen.
--Dany's storyline has seems to have improved over her S2 arc. In Clash of Kings, Dany didn't have as much material, so I can see why they had to pad out the Qarth storyline as they had, adding many original elements (like the whole Xaro/Pree conspiracy). But because the S2 arc strayed from the book, the filler/padding attempts became more obvious, which was to the detriment of her journey in S2. And while the House of the Undying thing couldn't have done the books justice due to budgetary reasons, the book's version of the House of the Undying was way cooler.
Whatever the case, Dany in S3 is off to a good start, and the final sequence of 3.04 was total badassery. It's obvious why they discarded the Arstan Whitebeard charade and had Barristan just present himself up front, though I was hoping to see Strong Belwas ('cause he's a badass, of course). Hopefully, he'll end up joining Dany's caravan as she sacks the cities of Slaver's Bay.
--As for the Night's Watch and the Wall, we didn't see the Battle at the Fist in the books, so I wasn't bummed to have had that cut; the execution of the aftermath was rather clunky, however. And I'm wondering if they still intend to work in the Sam the Slayer stuff, as well as whether Coldhands will appear. The mutiny at Craster's was well executed, however (though had the Battle of the First aftermath had been better handled, I think the mutiny sequence would have been stronger).
As for Jon, he hasn't had much to do other than hanging out with the Wildlings. Mance and Tormund have had their colorful personalities toned down a bit, but then again, they've toned down a lot for the show (particularly in the extravagance of the various Essosi peoples). Looking forward for the scaling of the Wall, at any rate. I'd imagine S3 will end with Jon defending the Castle Black against Tormund's party, then have S4 chronicle Jon preparing people for the Battle at Castle Black, the aftermath with Stannis, then with Jon being voted to become new Lord Commander.
--It'll be interesting how they handle Bran's storyline going forward. Book 3 ends with Bran and Friends crossing through the Wall, and Book 5 has him cross paths with the Children of the Forest to begin Greenseer training with the Last Greenseer. However, the only things of note for Bran before reaching the Wall is Queenscrown, so it seems that S3 will end with Bran's group crossing the Wall, and S4 will chronicle Bran's travel to reach the LG (which would likely happen in the latter half).
Because Bran had so few chapters in Dance, I wonder if they'll have to pad things out a little bit, which might not bode well. However they choose to handle it, I am interested in seeing if we'll see the Black Gate (which was cool), and how they'll depict the Children and the LG.
--In King's Landing, I'm liking what they're doing with Margaery, who was never a prominent character in the books. With the removal of Dontos Hollard, Littlefinger is forced to come straight to Sansa about his plans for her, though I hope they only reveal his role in the Purple Wedding after the fact. Speaking of weddings, it'll be pretty funny to see Tyrion be betrothed to Sansa, and the Red Wedding should be a sight to see.
--The magical/mystical aspects of the books were always intriguing, and I've consequently been a fan of how they've adapted these elements. The dragons look great, as do the direwolves; Melisandre's shadowbinding in S2 was nicely gruesome; Pyat Pree's multiplicity was something cool that wasn't seen in the books (and the warlock assassin in 3.01 was neat as well); Jaqen H'gar was awesome; the White Walkers looked epic in the S2 finale; and the Giants are very neat, and while I was intrigued by the striking differences in depicition, to have the Giants be giant men instead of behemoth sasquatches is a sensible shift (though I'm nonetheless crossing my finger to see some mammoths, as well as seeing Mag the Mighty and Wun Wun in particular later on). I'm guessing that the upcoming Beric Dondarrion resurrection reveal will be cool, as will all the other magical/mystical instances to come.
That's all I can think of for now. With Game of Thrones being so huge, it is doubtful that it will ever be cancelled, so it will likely be able to cover the entire book series. The only issue is whether Martin will be able to completed the last two books before the show overtakes him (I'd wager that he will finish before this happens, but who knows). Whatever the case, it doesn't look like Game of Thrones will be going anywhere soon, so I'm looking forward to the next few years of Thrones excellence.![]()
