You need to be selected by Nielsen Media to affect the ratings, and I have never met anyone with a Nielsen box in my life. Is anyone on here a "Nielsen family"?
I was under the impression they weren't allowed to say that they were? Hence even if one did know a Nielson family, you'd be unlikely to be told? (I'm unsure about this however)

Me neither! Are they all sworn to secrecy or something? See, this just makes the whole thing see even less worthy of my setting any stake by it. How can it be that I've never once met anyone with a Neilsen box or even known someone who knows someone who does? I feel like my circle of acquaintance is a pretty respectable cross section of the American populace, except that people I know are more likely to be educated beyond high school (but not all of them are!). Maybe it's a certain kind of person that would allow a box in their house at all. Self-selection is always a problem in polling and other "random" samplings for the purposes of statistics.

I'll let you in on a secret. The Nielsen Media Company is owned by Massive Dynamic

Pretty sure if that was the case Retlaw that Fringe would be bringing in more viewers than American Idol, regardless of whether people were actually watching or not.

Nah, it is in Massive Dynamic's best interest that Fringe goes off the air this season. The secrets that are about to be spilled in Season 4 counter their agenda. And Bell lied about Alt-Bell, who is really pulling all the strings.

And American Idol , DWTS, Houswives, Shore, etc. are all MD projects under dummy corps. They call it project "Dumbing Down America".

    Episode tonight !

By the way, German guy, I'd suggest just downloading the episodes via torrents and then purchasing the dvd sets once they are available in your area (to support the show).

Buying the DVDs don't support the show by way of keeping it on the air.

Fox (which does not produce the show) does not get any back-end such as DVD sales or international licensing, which is another reason why they are more likely to cancel the show if the live ratings are low.

Buying the DVDs supports Warner Bros.Television/Bad Robot's pockets, and they license the show to Fox at a relatively high price (for TV).

Nonetheless I own both seasons on blu-ray and watch them regularly.

Yeah I know that, but I mean like to support everyone involved with making such a good show. They must get some of the money made from the DVD/Bluray sales..

Yep. Like I said above Warner Bros. Television/ Bad Robot (JJ's production company) makes the money.

If the show cost less to Fox or they had more back-end that would factor in more favorably for them not to lean towards canceling it.

(A la Family Guy when it was first canceled, did huge DVD sales, and Fox brought the show back, and is now a steady hit.)
