Even then, BS wasn't classic Science Fiction as defined by novelists either.
Fringe's major plot points have always centered on the emotional choices made by its human characters - not the advances in science (at least not in our universe). The world of science is the environment where this very human story plays out, and the brilliance of Fringe is in its ability to balance the emotional arcs with the science. The way they've linked emotional context and science frankly makes the show richer, pulling at its viewers both intellectually as well as emotionally.
They can go overboard, in either direction - perhaps working for some of its audience and not other portions of its audience. What I love about the show now is that it hasn't disappointed me on either side.
Although there can never be enough Peter (sorry, just had to throw that in.)
