Location : Jacksonville, Florida

In this nursery home there is a room disguised as a makeshift lab. Bell waits inside as he checks his watch yet again in frustration. Walter strolls in giggling with a young girl eating a candy cane as Bell gives him a dissaproving look. The young girl stops and takes in all the medical equipment that surrounds her and in awe turns around to the man with the glasses to anticipate what she fears he might do. Her smile has changed to an expression associated with fear.

WALTER
Its alright Olive were not going to hurt you, were just going to help.

She turns and notices a medical sachet labelled CORTEXIPHAN.

OLIVE
Whats cortex-i-i-i pan.

Walter immediately freezes and wonders whether he has gone too far, he hears a voice echoing in his mind "Theres a storm coming Walter" he questions whether he can bring himself to do this, but he knows that in the search of answers there will always be consequences, the price he will pay is leading him to question his own morals.

OLIVE
And who's that man.

She points to Bell. There is a long pause as Walter takes a deep breath and convinces himself that what he is doing isnt wrong.

WALTER
Well Olive. The sachet is going to make you special.

OLIVE
Huh.

Walter crouches to eye level with Olive, he knows that this way he can comfort her and the child will not see through his pathetic lies.

WALTER
You will be unique, one of a kind, you will be able to do things that you would never even dream of. In fact all the things that are wrong in the world some day you may be able to fix and so we need to prepare you for a-a-a, a future adventure if you will!.

OLIVE
Where's Nicky, he came here and nows he's sick.

She starts croaking.

OLIVE
I-I-I, I don't want to be sick. I want to go home.

There is a tear running down her cheek she is scared but feels she can trust the man with glasses, he was brave enough to build a bond with this girl but he knows that he cant let his emotions get in the way, but they still do. Maybe he isnt cut out for this?, maybe he should have damned Bell's idea to experiment on children in the first place?. But that's the difference. Bell has sat their almost unselfconsciously as he scribbles down ways to exploit the childs mind, whilst Walter is going through emotions, doubting and questioning this experiment, whether this is right that he should exploit those weaker than him in search of answers. Then he remembers the risks he took in bringing back his son and hears the echoes "Peter's Dead" repeating in his head "You cant cross the line" plagues him.

Almost in tandem with Olive, Walter begins to tear. Bell looks up briefly and notices Walter's emotional state, he understands Walter's feelings but can acknowledge the threat to our world in the future which is the only thing that reassures Bell's conscience. Can the children prevent the storm? can we protect ourselves from the destruction of our world?. Bell calls Walter over.

BELL
Walter you have to understand if we dont--

WALTER
i cant, i cant do it Belly.

BELL
Walter, we both know that one day this world is going to need a guardian, someone to watch the gate, the girl is special.

WALTER
NO!

BELL
She could be the key Walter.

WALTER
You saw what bringing Peter back did! and yet you persist in pushing boundaries we have no right exploring!

BELL
Walter you of all people should know!, that sometimes in our search for knowledge, in our search for answers--

Bell pauses as he has second thoughts on what he is going to say.

BELL
We have to cross the line.

Olive in the midst of the argument climbs into the surgical chair. As they argue she pulls her teddy-bear close to her, embracing it hoping that the arguing will stop, hoping she does not end up sick like her friends did, hoping that she wont be alone, hoping that the two men wont experiment on her. The chair makes her feel protected and separated from the rest of the world with its comforting embrace. She closes her eyes and she is away from the nursery center. She can hear her mother "It's going to be alright Olive"

WALTER
Its not right Belly! there has to be another way!

Walter hesitates, he can hear the echoes again "Your not my father" its Peter.

WALTER
There are some lines we simply cannot cross!

BELL
Only those who risk going too far know how far they can go Walter.
