Their shifting devices also stream data.

Perhaps its a back door intentionally designed by Bell so that they could be reprogrammed by our side.

I'm glad he kept the decoder key in his office!
That clarifies everything....he's one of the good guys after all

Our Fringe team will make substantial progress after finding out what's in those disks
What if you and I, both of us, at this very moment were being manipulated?

    This I like. A lot.

And honestly, there are some shapeshifter-centric episodes I haven't even seen yet. Are there any scenes where they try to communicate with each other? Do they even know how to use them at all? I'm sure they know they are data discs, but do they even know what they store?

Dudette ..... I don't think that in and of itself makes him one of the good guys. He designed the Shapeshifters after all, so it would make sense he knows how to decrypt their data disks.

I still think Bell has his own agenda ... not for the Blue or the Red, but something else under his sleeve. If he had wanted to help us, he would have communicated how to decode the messages already, but he didn't. He waited until he could be front and center on the scene and manipulate things the way he wanted. There are actually a LOT of things he could have done differently by now.

    I do not trust Bellie

Yes, of course he designed them, apparently to gain Walternate's trust
But the key's not on the other side, it's here...

ETA: dudette sounds too much like guidette ..

    Default encryption key pair

    Just a thought...

I've wondered if the glass disks that were hidden in hands from season 1 could somehow be paired with the shapeshifter disks to get information. Kind of like an encryption public/private key pair combination. Maybe Bellie has a master key of some sort?

The half circle protrusion on the shapeshifter disks always seemed to suggest that to me, and we never did find out enough about ZFT. If Bellie was behind ZFT it would make sense that he would have a way for his agents to access the shapeshifter data if he worked on them.

yes !! and also it tells us that either he's willing to achieve the common good or just trying to protect one universe Vs an other

I would enjoy it if they made such a connection to season one episodes

Interesting idea, but I had a half-baked notion that John Scott will ultimately be found to have worked for the "yellowverse", and so his disk and those with disks like it won't completely be kosher with any disk specifically from the Redverse.

    Or did I miss something?

Cool John Scott theory! If we went further down the rabbit hole with it maybe the two universes have been in cahoots with each other all along against the red and the glass disks in the hand (theoretical private encryption keys) are from the yellow and the rigged shapeshifter disks (theoretical public key) are Bellie's contribution from the blue so they can surreptitiously work together against the red!

Might be a cool direction the writers could go. Bellie would have been able to hide information right in Walternate's own agents. (kind of like another type of encryption called steganography - you bury information in other information)

Or they'll go another direction entirely! I'm just having fun speculating!

What happened to the data disk for the cop that was shot by Newton?
Could that be one of the 5 data disks?
