We saw it for a brief second, I believe in "Over There" part 2 of the season 2 finale. Walternate brings out the power source of the machine to Peter and asks him to look at it. Before Walternate leaves the room where the power source was located, we get a view of the machine, and its already assembled Over There.

You just reminded me of the test of the Kobyashi Maru ... in Star Trek.

I'm not even a Trekkie, but this test has been referenced around me several times the last couple of days so it seems fitting. Esp since Nimoy is involved anyway lol

Basically, the test of the Kobyashi Maru is a test given to Starfleet Captains (correct me if I'm wrong) to see how they would react in a no-win scenario.

Essentially, what we have here is a no win scenario.

One of the popular methods to beat the test, is to cheat lol ..... maybe that's what we need in Fringe. Someone to "cheat". Not a Deus Ex Machina, but someone to be the "guy who breaks the rules for us" .... hmmm ... just who could that be?

Having them both activated would mirror the time machines in the comic book, but I am not sure if they would cancel themselves out, or if one person can trigger the use of both machines from just one, unless they are on a [ghost] network.

Some possibilities that I can I think of are they could act as a particle accelerator and could send Peter and/or his soul, or people he cares about some-when else....(his mind-emotions may play a factor)

Another possibility is that maybe they create stable door, or doors between universes (maybe even times)---or it morphs them into a blended future time---all that rises (<---thinking about seven suns: rising/setting) must converge.

I mean it seems like reciprocity is occurring in that we start out believing that there is more than one of everything, but the chaos between the two worlds appears like it just wants there to be 'one' of everything...so what if we could converge the remaining conscience of each counter part into one body...

What William Bell always wanted was to create a stable door between the two universes. This seems to have been the goal of the Cortexiphan studies. Opening a stable door might be what the device does, but what might it do if the universes are already unstable? Perhaps that's all irrelevant anyway based on what Sam told Nina, Peter has a role in deceding what will become of the universes and Sam says it has to do with which Olivia he chooses.

Maybe a 3rd universe (yellow) is a stabilizing factor?

Melding the 2 universes isn't the answer, imo, you'd end up with the same scenario as what happened when a building from over there melded with one here... well the people anyway, because as we have been told, the 2 universes share the same space.

Bell does seem to want Peter to consider the device, whereas Walter has been terrified of it. Perhaps Bell KNOWS what wil happen based on his FP knowledge.

That's an interesting point .... according to Walter, Bell always wanted to be able to hop between universes. Walter caused the degredation of the universes ... an undesireable effect. But Bell sees no problem with hopping around them, with Olivia as a "guardian" at the door.

This is also @ TheOtherMe: but perhaps Bell has some strange pseudoscientific method he thinks will work: "plugging" the door with souls after activating both machines at once. Or, building a stable worm hole (Stargate ) that would be fed the same energy of the parts which are degredating (sp?). Perhaps he needs both devices and some souls to do this lol.

I know those last two parts are completely ridiculous, but some of the things Fringe has shown us lately as possible places they are willing to go .....

    lol

Bell has his own agenda and he is willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to get it. Basically the guy is a sociopath who has no doubt that the ends justify the means, no matter what the cost. After all he did to Olivia when she was a kid, he slipped her a mind rape drug so he could take over her body, It is a violation plain and simple, and he does not care in the least. This is why I despise him.

That is (one of the) the mark(s) of a great show when you can truly despise a character.

Perhaps Bell sees Peter's destiny in the depiction of Peter operating the machine. Perhaps Bell feels like Morpheus from The Matrix movie (Matrix Revolutions?):

Morpheus: Tonight is not an accident. There are no accidents. We have not come here by chance. I do not believe in chance. ... I do not see coincidence, I see providence. I see purpose. I believe it is our fate to be here. It is our destiny. I believe this night holds for each and every one of us, the very meaning of our lives.

And perhaps Bell trusts Peter to do the right thing.

Perhaps Bell wants it to happen so he can get his corporeal body and his original plans re-booted.
